From The Catchy Title, I Know That This Story Was Going To Be For Me. The Plot Was Very Enjoyable And The Characters Fab. The Story Flowed Really Well, So Felt Quite Fast Paced And I Felt The Mystery Element Worked Well. The Story Was Quite Funny In Places ( A Vampyr Fuelled By Cherry Soda Was Epic). I Wasn't Expecting That Ending But Felt It Fitted The Story Nicely. Wyn And Sera Were Brilliant Characters But I Loved The Inclusion Of Morgan The Ghost-Butler And Pip & Essie The Post Bats The Best. I Think younger Teens Would Really Enjoy This Book.

Vampyr, Ghost, Assassin had a fun premise and some interesting supernatural ideas, but ultimately I think it was aimed at a younger audience than I expected. Some of the dialogue and humor felt a bit too young for my taste, which made it harder for me to fully get invested in the story. I can definitely see younger readers having a lot more fun with this one, but it just wasn't quite for me.

A vampire, a ghost AND an assassin? Seriously, what else do I need? 😂

This was such a fun combination of paranormal and fantasy elements. I loved discovering how all the characters fit together, especially because everyone seemed to have their own secrets and motivations.

The darker atmosphere worked really well for me, and there was enough action and mystery to keep things moving. I also became way more attached to the characters than I expected.

I had a great time with this one!

So this was my first NetGalley book I requested and will be reviewing! Super excited about that so, thanks to NetGalley and The Book Guild.

I chose this book because the plot seemed interesting. I mean Vampyrs and ghosts? Happy Summerween! This book centers vampyr Wyn who finds an unexpected surprise in his garden late one night: a human girl's body! The detective who turns up to investigate has it out for Vampyr kind and arrests his parents, assuming they killed the girl. The ghost of the girl, whose name is Sera, is inexplicably linked to Wyn. They journey off to find his parents, all the while being stalked by an assassin!

I did like this book. The butler, Morgan, Sera, was funny and witty. Wyn while unsure of himself initially, became more confident and grew as the book continued on. I will say I didn’t realize it’d be as YA as it was. I tend to read quite a bit of fantasy, so I guess I grouped it into the kind of books I read. I think I saw Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror and lept, missing the YA. I do think this is a good entry into the genre for middle/high school-aged kids who should definitely NOT be reading things like ACOTAR. No cursing, no convoluted plot lines, not too much world building, or intimate scenes. My only other issue was that I expected a bigger reason for the detective to have made her whole life about hunting down non-human kind. Would totally recommend to young kids who like reading and want to dip their toe into the fantasy genre!

this was a great YA fantasy! i love the paranormal aspect of it and it was very action packed. i really enjoy the found family trope so this was great.

I requested this book because the cover looked fun, the title and the description makeit sound like a fast passed mystery with an element of cat and mouse.

This is YA, so I’m not expecting it to be very gritty or violent. That’s fine with me though; I enjoy Young Adult works and they’re actually what got me back into reading regularly.

There were no advanced praise or blurbs that I could find, so I was really just going in based on the cover and description.

The reality is, this book is technically Young Adult but it is very Young Adult. I would say Middle Grade is more appropriate of a classification for this one.

Additionally, this was under the Horror | Sci-Fi & Fantasy | Teen & YA tags on NetGalley.

I would not say this is horror at all.

The horror tag is where I found this book, so if that were left off I likely would not have requested this title at all.

Once I realized that this was a middle grade paranormal fantasy, I adjusted my approach and expectations to be reading through the lens of “would I let my daughter read this or read it to her?”

Beyond the genre classifications being a bit misleading, this was an okay book. As a parent and a vampire fan, there are things that I did appreciate about Vampyr, Ghost, Assassin.

The Vampyrs in this book are much like Marceline the Vampire Queen in Adventure Time: they do not drink blood, they eat the color red.

Each Vampyr has their own “staple” food that gives them extra energy. Wyn, our main character, discovers that his staple is red cherry soda which is very cute. His mother’s is beet crisps and his grandparents was tomato sauce.
I always love to see the vampire myth be adapted and made their own and I think Rossati does a great job adapting to a middle grade audience.

The book also does a great job discussing topics that would be relevant to middle grade readers: puberty, becoming your own person outside of your parents and their dreams for you, and how dangerous stereotyping people who are different than you can be.

There is also a part where Wyn is apart of a fight that ends up messing up someone’s shop. He is ready to run off when the shopkeeper stops him and tells him he must help her clean up the mess.

Wyn attempts to wave her off and say “My parents will pay to have your shop cleaned up!” as his parents are wealthy council members.

The shopkeeper tells him that no, his parents aren’t the ones who made the mess and shouldn’t have to pay for his rowdiness. She then forces him to help clean up the shop.

I thought this was excellent messaging to children who think they can just have their parents fix their mistakes.

My critiques of this novel really may have to do with the fact that I am 30 years old and reading a book meant for 10-14 year olds.

I feel like the world building was not completely solid. The “rules” for the ghost not being able to be seen, heard, or travel very far from Wyn seem to be disregarded when it’s convenient.

The ending also felt a little… contrived. The villain’s motives don’t feel completely in line with the character and the reasoning is essentially “It’s my business and I’m not telling you!!”

There’s also a part that made me quite frustrated. Our human characters get really upset with Wyn, a Vampyr, for feeling that humans are dangerous and lumping them in with all humans.
Meanwhile, his parents are quite literally being tortured by humans as they are having this argument about how it’s “not fair” for him as a Vampyr to feel distrustful of all humans.

Wyn ends up apologizing to them first. It very much read as white people being upset that there are people of color who do not feel comfortable around or trust white people.

Sure, in a perfect world we are all treated fairly by the content of our character. But that’s not the way of the world and marginalized people are allowed to have misgivings about a group of people who have marginalized them for the majority of history.

This is part of the book that I would stop and have a conversation with my daughter that I think that could have been handled differently by the author.

Overall, this is a pretty solid middle grade paranormal fantasy.

I do think the marketing should be more clear about the age range for this. However, when I revisited the cover, I can see that the silhouettes are more childlike than I originally noticed. This could have been a bigger clue had I paid more attention.

I would feel comfortable with my daughter reading this and think overall, the messaging is good and handles “embarrassing” topics like puberty in an accessible, relatable way.

I think this could be enjoyable for anyone of any age hoping for a nostalgic read for a simpler time in life as well as something with lower stakes and very mild violence. As I said, these vampires do not consume blood, so the gore factor is also incredibly low.

This is also for people who may enjoy a found family trope. I found the relationships built between the characters to be heartwarming and authentic.

Also given the age range and what felt like a lack of a lot of character detail, I imagined the Gatteaux family as the vampires from the 2003 Scary Godmother Halloween movie.

Is it a catfish?

Well, sorta kinda.

When I Google the book, it does explicitly say that it is a Middle Grade Young Adult. However, that wasn’t clear to me on NetGalley.

When first writing this I wondered if there even is a middle grade tag on NetGalley. This book did not have it.

But… there is!!

So, I’m not really sure what the justification is for choosing Teen & YA for this when Middle Grade was quite literally right there.

I‘m giving Vampyr, Ghost, Assassin three stars.
I think this would be a fun read for a middle grade reader or even someone who enjoys paranormal fantasy without a lot of violence or romance.
I’m not really that person.

I feel that this one should have been sorted differently on NetGalley and honestly it probably would not have even crossed my radar. I don’t think it’s bad - I’m just not the target audience.

I really did enjoy this take on the vampire myth, though. I thought it was fun and age appropriate!

And honestly, if a book is going to be classified incorrectly, I’d rather it be classified incorrectly in this way rather than really pushing the boundary for explicit content in a YA.

A fun, engaging read and a different take on the usual vampire tale for younger teen readers.

Instead of blood think sugary sweets and cherry soda for vampire sustenance! So, don't expect gore, or romance, but there is suspense, and action appropriate to the younger audience.

Well written characters and an amusing storyline bring the reader into the story successfully and keep their attention throughout the narrative.

I particularly loved Sera the ghost, who loves teasing Wyn, calling him: 'Needle teeth,' and Eva, the assassin too, all the characters are ones you feel drawn to, and end up caring about even the 'bad guys.'

You will appreciate the storytelling adventure to recover Wyn's parents and enjoy the quirks of this cool gang, with the revelation about the villain concluding the story in a totally satisfying and relatable way.

A lovely read, I'm much older than the intended readership but being young at heart I really enjoyed it.

Highly recommended, I guarantee it will make you smile.

When young master Wyn's parents are arrested falsely for a crime they didn't commit, he's left alone in his house with an unexpected ghostly companion. What an exciting premise!

I loved this book from start to finish, it was a really enjoyable read. It was a little simple, but definitely perfect for the 11-14 age range, I think. Kids should be reading this over some of the content that is currently being pushed towards them, at the very least. I really enjoyed the companions that followed along Wyn in his journey to find his aunt and release his family members, and the ending tied it all together in a very satisfying way.

That being said, I do wish that the book went into a little more depth on certain plot points, though this isn't a failing of the book, just indicative of the audience the book is intended for.

This was such a fun, spooky read! I loved the mix of ghosts, mystery, and murder, and the creepy atmosphere kept me hooked. It had plenty of twists and an entertaining cast of characters. A quick, enjoyable read for anyone who loves a good paranormal mystery!

Review for 'Vampyr, Ghost, Assassin' by Kathryn Rossati

This is the first book we have read by this author but it will not be our last and we are looking forward to reading more books by Kathryn!

I must admit that with this book being fantasy and Young Adult it is not my typical sort of genre but I was intrigued by the eye catching cover and synopsis so decided to give it a read. I am pleased that I did as I really enjoyed it. If you are like me and this is not the usual type of book that you would chose then take a risk, expand your genre choices and you may just decide that it is the type of book for you! This absolutely fantastic book may be aimed at children and young adults with the age rating Amazon has given being 11-17 but, sadly, at the age of 39 I am no longer classed as a child or even as a young adult but I really enjoyed it as did my 38 year old partner!! My 13 year old son Malaki also read it and really enjoyed reading it too!! Regardless of whether you are 10 or 100 this is a brilliant, fun and action packed read!! With a storyline ram packed with adventure, vampyr's, fantasy, ghosts, vampire hunters, mystery, drama, myths, danger, supernatural, humour, friendship, great characters and much more this is the perfect and ideal book for young adults to sink their teeth into! THIS is the sort of book that young adults should be reading, one that is perfect to start with for fantasy fans, with no graphic scenes, violence or anything of an adult nature. This truly is a brilliant book for all children to bring them imaginations to life!! Each of the characters had their own unique personalities with individual strengths, quirks, flaws, weaknesses!! Each and every one of them came to life thanks to Kathryn's fantastic evocative descriptions and we all became completely immersed in this fantastic fantasy. The fact that Kathryn cares about her characters clearly shines through the pages in how much detail and the individual personalities that she has given to each of them ensuring they leap out of the pages and come to life at the turn of every single one! We absolutely devoured this book very quickly in just one day. None of us wanted to put it down! Our personal favourite character just had to be protective Morgan the ghost butler!! We all absolutely loved him! I really could go on and on about this book is but my words will never do it justice so if you love fantasy, unique stories, the whimsical, fun, magic and adventurous books, well no matter what you are into or love you and your children will enjoy this fantastic book so grab a copy now!! We are all looking forward to seeing what else Kathryn has and will come out with next!

Overall a fun fantasy that you will love sinking your teeth into!
