Cats have long carried an unfortunate reputation as mysterious, aloof, and tied to the occult. Nightcats leans fully into that mythology with ancient, vampiric cats that feed on blood and kill anyone who gets in their way.

The story is creepy, atmospheric, and fast-paced, with beautifully lyrical prose that adds an almost dreamlike quality to the darker moments. With strong characterization, an intriguing premise, lyrical writing, and plenty of blood and gore, Nightcats is an unsettling and engrossing read. It offers plenty to think about regarding female agency and reclaiming power while delivering genuinely disturbing encounters with its vampiric cats. Readers should be prepared for graphic violence, animal abuse, blood, gore, and some deeply creepy imagery.

Every cat-lover, feminist, and goth should read this book!

The story is pieced together largely through quick chapters through several different perspectives, but the longest of them are from our main character Vera; a down-on-her-luck goth in 2005 NYC, dealing with a mediocre relationship and few prospects. That is, until an heirloom from her late aunt drags her into a world of mysterious cults, bloody sacrifices, and, of course, lots of cats.

The various settings, time periods, and especially the mythology and folklore explored in this book felt so rich and well-researched. The prose was accessible but still quite beautiful and poetic at many points. If I ever end up with a physical copy of Nightcats I will absolutely be going through and highlighting all my favorite quotes!

The exploration of the cat mythos through different cultures and religions was so fascinating and blended together so seamlessly with the fantasy it felt as if it could be the truth. Not only that, but the way the author offers up every possible angle of the situation but never pushes the reader toward a particular moral conclusion was genuinely exhilarating as the stakes grew higher and higher. The final crescendo was everything I had hoped for, but the aftermath did leave one thread missing for me and made the ending more bittersweet than what I expected. Though there was enough ambiguity that I'm happy to fill in the unknown myself, without the need for a sequel.

All in all, a fantastic and fun story! Thank you so much to Kristen J Sollee and her new publishing house Feral Eye for the chance to read this beauty early! Will be keeping a close watch on what you publish next!

This book was a wildly entertaining read that I was excited to come back to each time I continued reading. The way that the different timelines and characters were woven together was interesting, compelling, and ultimately produced a satisfying conclusion to the story. For a novel that spans a range of time periods, the research and historical context included felt genuine without spending too much time on explaining the different settings. The way in which the author demonstrates twentieth and twenty-first century occult engagement with Egyptian and medieval history and mythology was thought-provoking.

This book takes a lot of well-known horror themes and reimagines them in a way that felt fresh. The pacing did not feel forced, and the characters were all unique and fully developed. While many of the characters have complicated motivations and backstories, the nuance with which they are portrayed provided a true depth to all of them.

Looking for more spooky books as we enter the BER months, Nightcats is one you need to read this spooky season. A brilliant story of vampires, an early 2000’s feel and the bond between women and cats. It’s all a girl can want from a book. Absolutely adored this.

was very happy to receive an ARC of Nightcats, being a cat person myself (mother of two beautiful adopted boys) and as someone who is fascinated by the occult and extremely sceptical at the same time. Not dissimilar to the main character, Vera.

The book was a delicious experience for me. It is a love letter to the “goth kids” who grew up in 80's and 90's reading Anne Rice books, listening to Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus, watching The Crow, The Hunger, The Lost Boys and all the cult/vampire movies from the time.

The story doesn't sugar coat its heavy themes, offering a raw, honest look at the struggles many of us face—sadly, often completely alone.

Sollée’s new take on vampires is very interesting and compelling and you might learn a spell or two while reading.

I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Nightcats. Specially now that spooky season is officially open.

UMMM HELLO???? VAMPIRES AND CATS???? I WAS SOLD IMMEDIATELY.

Nightcats was such a fun, weird, dark, and completely feral read. I loved the combination of occult horror, vampires, feminism, cats, and dark humor. It’s such a unique concept and somehow manages to make cats feel even more mysterious and terrifying than they already are 😂.

I really enjoyed Vera’s journey throughout the story, especially watching her slowly claw her way out of the life she felt trapped in. The whole exploration of women, power, independence, and what we sacrifice to survive was SO interesting.

And the cat lore??? YES. I loved how much mythology and occult history was woven into the story. It gave everything this creepy, gothic atmosphere while still being genuinely fun.

This was such a strange little book in the best possible way, and I absolutely ate it up. If you love cats, vampires, feminist horror, occult mysteries, or just books that are a little unhinged, you NEED to pick this up.

A Sisters of Mercy tee, coffin-shaped wallet, and Razr phone—this is the authentic early 2000s goth experience! With fall (slowly) descending outside, I want to oil up my Docs and artfully rip my tights so I can go hang out with Vera, the main character.

I expected a fun, nostalgic romp through the metaphorical (or real) graveyard, and the book definitely delivered. It also had unexpected depths—without giving anything away, we learn almost immediately that Vera used to be Catholic, and this book deals with supernatural themes. I found her struggle raw and authentic.

Creepy, visceral, atmospheric, this a must-read for anyone who loves cats, goths, and badass women.
