Let me start by saying this book is short. Altogether, it meets the minimum word count to technically be considered a novella. However, this book contains fifteen interconnecting stories plus an epilogue making it feel like a short, but perfectly rendered novella instead of just a collection of really short stories. And that's one reason why I liked this one so much.

The meat of this book, this collection of stories, is one of my favorite tropes of mine in horror. I think non-living things which appear as human are horrifying in real life. Dolls, mannequins, scarecrows, and obviously dummy's. They just stare at you with those dead human-esque eyes. Creepy. And in this book, a man who wants to be the worlds best ventriloquist finds this book and is compelled to follow it to an occult/book store. There's a horrible painful price to pay though and let's just say it's pretty disturbing. But it does work...for a few years.

At the heart of this book is the old man who runs this bookstore and his magical ambitions with potions, spells, and dark magic which allows him to turn humans into willing slaves in a very specific way.

Yeah, all of these stories are all interconnected with this storyline and each one is short and gets to the terrifying stuff without filler. The last story really ties it all together and, for a book this short, that's quite an accomplishment.

One more thing. Horror has always been political in some fashion and I love a good book where the terror is underlined by the societal or political issues of the day. I appreciate that. But not every book needs to be about something besides the horror. Not every book needs to be three hundred to five hundred page tomes. While important, some stories just need to be freaky, fun, and entertaining. That's what this one is.

It's short, it's to the point, it connects various characters, and you'll be happy you've read it. I highly recommend it.
