Description

“Engrossing and wonderfully atmospheric”
Booklist Starred Review

An explosion on a Norfolk beach leads to far-reaching consequences for detectives Shaw and Valentine.

When an explosion rips across Hunstanton Beach on the north Norfolk coast, an abandoned Second World War bomb is assumed to be the cause . . . but is it? Could there be a connection with the new pier being built – and the increasingly bitter campaign to halt its construction?
At the same time, DI Shaw and DS Valentine are on the hunt for an elderly female killer with a uniquely macabre method of despatch. And a 63-year-old Dutch engineer is missing, presumed drowned . . . but where is the body?
All seemingly unrelated investigations – but in each case nothing is as it seems. To find the answers, Shaw must delve into the past, and a mystery that has remained unsolved for more than sixty years.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Severn House foe an advance copy of Death Ship, the seventh novel set in Hunstanton, Norfolk to feature DI Peter Shaw and DS George Valentine.

It seems relatively quiet in Hunstanton apart from an elderly lady poisoning random victims by giving them sweeties and a rash of vandalism protesting against the building of a new pier. DS Valentine is staking out the bus stop where the poisoner strikes when a bomb goes off on the beach. Is it an old WWII bomb, ordinance left when the Americans pulled out in the 60s or an escalation of anti-pier protest? Nobody is sure but the case takes a further twist when the blast uncovers the body of a missing Dutch visitor.

There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot and nothing is as it seems. I found it hard to put down as I was always wondering what would be coming next. Both plot lines are ingenious but I felt a bit at sea with some of the nautical details as I just couldn't follow or imagine them. I cannot illustrate this without spoilers.

Now that Shaw and Valentine are getting along much better the narrative concentrates on the plot rather than the characters who are developed as much as the plot requires without extraneous detail. This suits the rather spare writing style and I think Mr Kelly has the balance right.

I enjoyed Death Ship and have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.
