A Roman slave with a serpent tattoo uncovers his true barbarian identity... A battle for power among Frankish warlords leads to a mass exodus across the Rhine... All the while, Marcus Aurelius' Roman army pushes further north, changing everything. These seemingly unrelated events meet in a cataclysm that alters the course of history.

In the background, the ageing witch Chlotsuintha predicts it all. Or is she the one pulling the strings to shape her people's future?

When Sextus escapes Rome with a pocketful of gold and a knife, how could he even have dreamt of what the fates might have in store for him?

Pursued by Roman soldiers for the murder of his master, Sextus enlists the help of a retired gladiator, and falls in love with the gladiator's niece. An invading German army drives them further north, where Sextus discovers his true birthright, and his real name - Galdir. He becomes caught up in a bitter feud as one of the heirs of a dead Frankish warlord; but the blood feud must be put aside when the Romans invade and besiege the Frankish capital.

'Galdir' is enthralling Roman fiction - a tale of love, brutal battles and conflict, in which a mystical prophecy winds its way through an epic saga of struggle against Rome, and the consequences of resistance by the Frankish people, its Warlord and its witches.

Advance Praise

A selection of reviews from Amazon and Goodreads:

"A captivating tale of heroism that grabbed my attention from the first page."

"I couldn't stop reading, the story is fast-paced and told with great precision. This book is the first in a series, with Galdir being a sort of 'thinking man's Conan'"

"Wow! Fred does it again. A masterly tale, full of excitement, intrigue and colourful backdrops. Bloody fights and battles have never seemed more immediate, the ancient world re-created with skill and authority."

"This is a fascinating tale told with eloquence. It is rare to climb deep inside a character's skin so early on in a book, but from the opening paragraphs we begin to feel just how the life of a Roman slave would have been."

"A fine piece of historical fiction."

"This is a great book, and it could be a great movie."

"One of the highest compliments that I can pay a book is to look for other books by the same author and in the same series as soon as I finish the book. I did this with Galdir – not because the ending was unsatisfying but because I wanted to linger longer in the world created by Fredrik Nath. We are all familiar with the massive, powerful Roman Empire, but other than the story of the beginning of Christianity, the focus is almost always on the incredible lifestyles led by the Romans, the romance of their artistic and architectural achievements, the wealth and scope of the Empire. In Galdir, we see the horror of the nations vanquished by the rapacious Romans..."

"An amazing book set in time of Roman Empire. It is enthralling historical fiction full of brutal battles and conflicts, but also mystical prophecies and love."

"If you’re looking for an adventurous, suspenseful, and interesting book, I would highly recommend Galdir: A Slave’s Tale by Fredrik Nath. Although I don’t know much about ancient Rome, it was still a wonderful world to get sucked into."

"An epic tale of adventure from slavery to the warlord of the Franks."
