Description

The single most important trait necessary for success is self-discipline. Everyone who has succeeded in life swears by it, because this is the only reason why you can reach your goals, stay motivated, and keep working on difficult tasks even when the enthusiasm wanes. Self-discipline will also enable you to overcome obstacles in your path and push your limits to greater heights.

We talk about self-discipline every other day, but barely give it the attention and weight it deserves. This book changes all that and introduces you to the concept of self-discipline in multiple dimensions. If your goal is to succeed, both in your professional and personal life, this is the book for you.

A lot of the challenges you experience in life that distract you from your purpose are things that you internalise, build slowly over time, and you never realise how or when they steal your life away. Things like procrastination, losing focus, lack of confidence, and making skewed decisions because of emotional conflict, or simply letting your emotions run your life, are some of the reasons why success remains an illusion for many people. They seem like simple things that you can get over very easily, yet people struggle with them all the time. You will also learn about the psychological aspect of productivity and creativity, and how to align them with your goals.

You are in charge of your life, the master of your destiny. You will learn practical tips to help you pave the way to success. Forget about everything people say about success. Redefine your version of success. Identify your purpose in life, and create a map of how to get there. What lies on the other side of your fears, is a healthier, more disciplined and successful you, and it all begins with the ability to control your behaviour, emotions, reactions and impulses—self-discipline.

The single most important trait necessary for success is self-discipline. Everyone who has succeeded in life swears by it, because this is the only reason why you can reach your goals, stay...

Seriously great book! It's equal parts inspirational, common sense and informational. It's an easy read with dozens and dozens of useful nuggets.

Self-Discipline by Wes Vivanco is a quick book with some good insights. Much of it was a synopsis/review of concepts I’ve read about before and many readers may already be familiar with. Then, the last chapter struck a chord because it reminded me of some concepts I’ve been working to reconcile lately, Grace & Space (Creativity) vs Time Management (Productivity):

“Productivity and creativity are two aspects of success that usually coexist, but in many cases, might also exist in perpetual tension. These two might share some similarities and value in your pursuit of success, but don’t be confused, they are dissimilar. For a start, while you can measure productivity, it’s difficult to apply the same metrics to creativity.

“Productivity involves efficient and effective planning and scheduling throughout your busy day. Creativity, on the other hand, generally demands letting go of all the inhibitions that come with structure and the systematic methods of going about your day. Creativity thrives on freedom, while productivity thrives on structure, and in many cases, rigidity.”

And then later in the chapter…

“One can never exist without the other. It is through the creative process that your visions come to life. Creativity is about disrupting the status quo, challenging the system, rethinking and reshaping the way you work and live. Productivity is the grit, process, and determination that goes into turning an idea from concept to reality, and in most cases, under uncomfortable situations. Circumstances are not always ideal for productivity, but the end result is sustainability.”

It was reassuring to read and hear another perspective that both are necessary but often feel at odds with each other.

Life is now - let’s get out of our own way and get to living it. This was a good, quick read. Not all of the content was new to me but I still found it to be refreshing and insightful. I feel like I understand myself a little better and I’ve learned some tools to get myself moving and not get in my own way.

One of the most consequential books to read of you have issues with leading yourself. Nothing can be accomplished if you first don't have discipline. Highly recommend!
