This is the conundrum confronting recently widowed farmer John Gault, when friends encourage his dormant writing ambitions to distract him from his recent loss.

It’s harder than it sounds – especially with no particular victim in mind.

An excellent contemporary romantic thriller ... fast paced, very well written and a great story. Both recently widowed, John and Sarah, work on a book that John was considering writing ... 'The Perfect Murder'. As the book starts to come together their story takes a turn and turns into reality. 'Clean Kill' was very difficult to put down and well worth five (5) stars. Well done Nick Everard and the team at The Book Guild.

An Often Sharp Edge…
When writing becomes an escape from emotional heartache, widowed John Gault suddenly finds his evolving novel turning into something way more sinister than the printed page. Is he actually planning the perfect murder? With a credible cast and entertaining prose this is a lighthearted suspense with an often sharp edge.

Recently widowed John Gault meets a recently widowed woman through friends of his. They get to know each other and she encourages him to write a novel, something he has always wanted to do. He has a great idea, a perfect murder, but how? Not long after, the idea becomes much more sinister than originally intended.

The author managed to write a decent paced crime thriller that is certainly a fun read. The writing about the idea of a perfect murder is interesting and well worked out. Sometimes it's a bit much with all the characters, especially at the beginning of the book, but once you've gone through that, it's a fine book.

I loved this book but can’t exactly say why. It wasn’t my usual type of favourite but from start to finish I just thoroughly enjoyed it. Don’t go looking for some deep meaning to life plot with intense characters but if you love a story that gets you hooked then this is it.

I liked the characterization and the plot progression and pacing was really good. In fact, I believe that the pacing and tension are the two things that made this book such a huge hit.

Clean Kill” to me via a Net Galley giveaway for the advanced reader copy in return for an honest review. Here is my review.
“ Clean Kill” is a British crime thriller, but not a murder mystery. The reader knows early on that a murder will happen and who will commit the crime. Who, where and when are made clear. The suspense can they get away with it?
A brief summary of the plot, in whi I will try to. Or give too much away:
John Gault a recent widower who remains despond’s t, unfocused and unconnected as he goes about his lonely life, meets Sarah, a widow. The attraction grows and they begin going out together. Sarah’s husband committed suicide. John and Sarah are ready fora new start.
One evening while on a date, Sarah says that John needed to find something to find focus on something that would fill his days, other than her. He mentions that he had a crazy idea to write a thriller. Sarah encourages John , and they agree that he will have a plot outline by their next date. He does: a novel about a man who commits the perfect crime- a murder of a man who is totally unknown to John, a man who deserves killing for his many unpunished crimes. John has someone in mind.
He names a “ godfather” of the British criminal underground, a man responsible for everything from extortion, to murder for hire. Bold, cruel, arrogant and free, and The Godfather is a prime target.
The fun part of the story is watching John and Sarah, two people who have never had a parking ticket plan a murder. The reader is part of every step of how, when and where. Along with the two lovers, for that is what they are by now, the reader watches as third plan comes together. When the day comes, the reader is so drawn into the plan that it is easy to be on their side as they commit a cold killing.
The reader gets the feeling that murder is somewhat titillating to this plain vanilla couple; it is certainly the most fun, daring thing that ever happened to them. Their days are filled with the plan. Their nights are passionate (Note: not too explicit, but steamy.) Then they are ready, plans complete, their resolve un-diminished . However, Unknown to the two, other people have the same plans. Will the plans conflict, making everything go bad? Will it be a Clean Kill or a bloody mess?

My summary is that the idea is a bit hard to believe. John is simply too nice a guy, Sarah too kind. The kill-plot depends on a lot of things that have to click. The story is wordy for the most part, until the climax which does satisfy. “ Clean Kill” is a average to good effort.

The author is a skilled practitioner and yet this is his debut novel. I was thrilled to find such an accomplished new writer.
Nick Everard steps outside the structure of conventional murder mysteries and thankfully avoids the tropes of Cozy crime fiction. He has created a plot that is both original and engaging. There are plenty of unexpected twists and memorable characters and the story unfolds with razor-sharp precision. There's a bit of black humour and a real sense of excitement as the denouement approaches. A rare treat to be offered the mechanics of a perfect murder.
