Description

Discover the meanings, powers, facts, and folklore for over 500 herbs and spices in The Complete Language of Herbs—now in a pocket-size edition for easy, on-the-go reference.

Along with a beautiful visual depiction, each entry provides the herb or spice’s scientific and common names, characteristics, and historic meanings and powers from mythology, medieval legends, folklore, and flower poetry.

Did you know that allspice can be added to herbal mixtures to attract money or luck? Or that sprinkling arrowroot at the doors of your home will keep guests’ negative energy from entering? Reaching the height of popularity during the Victorian era, floriographies—dictionaries of symbolic flower meanings—were an amusing pastime and art to subtly communicate unspoken emotions.

To complement the success of The Complete Language of Flowers, author S. Theresa Dietz has scoured historic sources and compiled an equally beautiful compendium in The Complete Language of Herbs, revealing the secrets and powers of hundreds of common and forgotten herbs and spices from around the world.

Together with stunning full-color illustrations and two indexes, one for searching by common herb and spice name and the other organized by meaning, this beautiful reference is a must-have for gardeners, chefs, party planners, and food enthusiasts.

This is such a beautiful guide book on herbs and the additional descriptions and little bits of information on each herb makes this something interesting for those who are both new and already averse in the language of herbs.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.

Absolutely loved this book, I am a huge fan of clearly getting to the point, and book set up like this. Easy to find the herb, author’s elegantly layout is so pleasing on the eyes and brain. Sometime there just too much info when you are just needing to look up a herb, and can’t find it or feel overwhelmed with the information. The book solves all that.
I also absolutely loved the author’s authentic opening of how her journey and the book came about. You can clearly feel the authenticity in the words she right.

The best of the best when it comes to describing herbs. This is the latest instalment in the author’s series on herbs.

The presentation, the writing, the brief description and the colourful details all give a very fulfilling reading experience.

Just go for this without thinking twice.

Thank you, Wellfleet Press, for the advance reading copy.

This is exactly what I have been looking for! I am some what new to the world of herbs and a lot of books and guides can be super overwhelming. The Complete Language of Herbs by S. Theresa Dietz is perfect. Each herb is shown with an illustration along with other names, symbolic meanings, folklore, facts, and other little gems. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for information on herbs. The illustrations were also so beautiful. Thank you so much for this opportunity!

This book was a lovely herbal encyclopedia, but I’m disappointed with the illustrations. They were not as clearly defined as I had expected. I believe that picture images would have been better, but this is my opinion. Besides that, the book was a treasure trove of knowledge.

As someone who is obsessed with botanical illustrations, this did not disappoint! I’ll be honest, that’s the majority of the reason why I picked this up.

There are colorful, delicate, gorgeous illustrations throughout the book. Paired with information on culinary, medical, and spiritual uses for each herb, I think this book is pretty close to perfect. I enjoy mythology and folklore, so I liked the way that was woven into this book as well.

I definitely can’t wait to find a physical copy for my shelves!

The Complete Language of Herbs Is something I have been waiting to read for a long time. S. Theresa Dietz did a wonderful job creating this book, and it is thee all in one companion I will be using every time I want to know about a flower or herb, I am using in my day-to-day life. The information is not to lengthy, is very informative and straight to the point The key at the beginning of the book helps identify whether a plant is medicinal, culinary, or poisonous is easy to read and very helpful when looking for a particular flower or herb I find illustrations of each plant to be beautiful and being able to have so much knowledge in one book makes me so excited to have this book in my personal library.

Wow! This book is a wealth of information about hundreds of herbs and spices!

A few things to note:
1. The herbs are organized by scientific name with a full listing of common names and common varieties.
2. The listing for each herb provides symbols regarding toxicity, medicinal use, and culinary use, symbolic meanings, possible (magic) powers, and Folklore and Facts.
2. Each herb is portrayed by a drawing- either in color or black ink. Some are more detailed than others, but they are all beautiful in their own way.
3. This book is more for reference about magical/folklore uses than actual uses, so it's more of a general reference book than actual instructions for use.

I reviewed an ARC ebook copy. Thank you to Wellfleet Press and NetGalley for the opportunity! I can imagine this will be a gorgeous print book!

This book is filled with fun and interesting information on all the herbs you could possibly dream of. Each page was full of information regarding the herb's scientific name, common names, symbolism, and uses. I would recommend this book to anyone with a magical interest in herbs. The illustrations were nice, but actual photos would have enhanced this book. A really enjoyable read! I would definitely recommend this book as an addition to our collection.

A beautiful guide to folklore, magic, and the glory of herbs. Herbalists and witchy folks who love plants should consider adding this book to their reference shelves.
This is not exactly a book you sit down and read though, I will acknowledge that. Its a reference book that you turn to when you want information about a specific herb or plant. As long as you keep that in mind, it is fantastic - well written, researched, indexed, and beautifully put together.

I adore all of Theresa Dietz's work! I already have a copy of an older edition, plus others in this series - so this was an instant pick for me! I love the illustrations (although I would prefer more realistic images, if only because I am a very visual person), plus the symbolic/powers and folklore/facts. Each herb has uses, of course, but the added knowledge of how they were used historically is absolutely fantastic. I will definitely be adding it to my self as soon as I can!

I love the cover for this book, for one, and the illustrations are just delightful. I adore reference books and as someone who is really interested in herbology this really was a delight to flip through. If someone gave this to me for Christmas I would be so happy.

This book was really informative. It was just different herbs and their names and purposes but I loved seeing all the little plant images and reading what the historical meanings and uses of them were. This would make a very good coffee table book. I love learning about different nature things and this book definitely filled that want.

This is such a beautiful book, and so full of knowledge! I loved that the author went into such great depth for each of the herbs, and there was such a great variety of herbs included!

A charming, well researched book. Many interesting facts about everyday herbs, but also some which are less well known,
The list is in alphabetical order according to the herb's scientific name.
I loved the information around the folklore of the plants and the little drawings are gorgeous.
An easy to use and understand book. I know that I will be delving into it many times.

This is adorable! Not only describes to you what the herbs mean but it gives you a cute blurb of the folklore and facts behind it, as well its possible powers. Reading wise everything is cohesive and flows really well. My only qualm is the pictures aren’t the best quality and some are just completely black but that very much could be my tablet. Other wise very adorable, will be purchasing once released!

Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group- Wellfleet press, for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own:
I love it! The book contains interesting and concise information about herbs. I like that it is organized by number, including the scientific name of the herb, common names, symbolic meanings (i.e., what it means to receive this plant), potential energy powers, toxicity symbols, and a brief folkloric tale of the herb. It is beautifully organized, with a delicate aesthetic. It has compiled information from many plants! And the book has good bibliographic references. I believe it would be an ideal book for every practitioner of green magic, green witches, kitchen witches, and all herb enthusiasts. Highly recommended.
