A guide empowering marginalized leaders, especially women, to reclaim their authentic voice. Drawing from her journey as an immigrant and high-achieving professional, Sheila blends personal insight with behavioral science to address self-doubt, toxic environments, and systemic barriers. The book is divided into three parts: “Hold Up Your Own Mirror: Know Thyself” explores self-awareness and breaking through inner glass ceilings; “Reflect on Your Surroundings: Understand Your Environment” navigates challenging workplaces and personalities; and “Make a Life Worth Mirroring: Set Yourself Up for Success” offers tools for building support networks and mastering negotiations. It combines relatable anecdotes with practical strategies, making it accessible yet profound.
The book shines in its empathetic tone and actionable advice, though it occasionally repeats its core message and lacks a prescriptive structure or empirical data. Its focus on women and marginalized groups is a strength but may limit broader appeal. Sheila’s emphasis on self-belief, community support (e.g., Biotech CEO Sisterhood), and energy management provides a holistic framework for transformation. Ideal for aspiring leaders and coaches, The Mirror Effect is a mirror and manual, urging readers to see their brilliance and lead boldly. It’s a timely, transformative read for those ready to redefine success on their terms.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I found The Mirror Effect overall to be a thoughtful guide for those looking to lead with compassion and quiet their inner critic. Dr. Gujrathi included personal stories and practice advice which made the book more approachable. That said, not all parts of this book will be relevant for the individual reading it based on where you are in life at any given time. Its a solid resource for anyone interested in gaining a better grasp on leadership.

Thanks to @netgalley @sheilagujrathimd & @amplifypubgroup for the ARC.
This book piqued my interest as soon as I read "Dismantle Your Inner Critic." I am, at times, my own worst enemy, especially within my work life so I have come to read this at a key stage in my career. It talks about compassionate and transformational leadership and being able to break free from stereotypical marginalisation within the workplace.
This is a book that I will, more than likely, keep coming back to depending on where I am in my career, and I would definitely recommend it, more so as part of your leadership journey.
This book offers an empowering guide for women, people of colour, and other marginalized professionals on breaking through the barriers that can hold them back. Dr. Gujrathi shares practical tips and thoughtful insights aimed at helping readers succeed and thrive. As a woman and ally, I think the content and message of this book are both important and timely. While it didn’t quite align with my own current experience, I can see it being very helpful and encouraging for many readers. I also really appreciated the author’s expertise and clear intent to support and uplift others through this work.
