Description

A dark mystery about books, writing and creation that will be enjoyed by readers who loved The Shadow of the Wind, The Book Thief and Misery

Edgar Johnson’s world is changing. At home, the manuscripts of his rejected novels rustle and whisper that he’s a failure, while out in the park a young woman seeks his help with a problem only he can solve. Too late, Edgar learns that no good deed goes unpunished—and that the price of failure might be his soul.

Meanwhile, Jacqueline Moran, errant daughter of a fading seventies superstar, checks herself into an exclusive mental health clinic, where her life will be changed forever. And, between the two, Richie Richards – a medium for the millennials, whose performances blur the line between illusion and the afterlife and challenge our understanding of reality.

As Edgar and Moran take their separate journeys to a collision with fate, they find their stories are bound together in a way neither could have imagined.

A very interesting take on a classic ghost story. Edgar is a writer who is struggling with having a successful manuscript; on top of all that, he sees ghosts around him. Edgar thought he was going nowhere until he meets a young woman in the park as they come to realize that they need each other to complete each other's missions. A young woman checks herself into a mental hospital in the hopes of getting her life back on track and a medium who can't differentiate between delusions and reality. What do these characters have in common and how will their stories end?

I honestly really liked this story. It did take a bit for me to get into it but once I did, I'm glad I decided to finish it! Really relatable characters and creative scenarios. I'm not much for paranormal stories but I'm glad I got to check it out.

I would like to thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC book in exchange for an honest review.

The Ghost Writer is a moody, magnetic tale that lingers like mist on a winter morning. Ian Siragher invites us into the haunted quiet of Edgar Johnson’s life—a writer adrift in rejection, whose manuscripts whisper failure and whose fate is rewritten by a stranger in the park.

This is a novel that doesn’t shout—it hums. It’s for readers who love their mysteries literary, their characters flawed but tender, and their stories stitched with threads of the uncanny. Think The Shadow of the Wind meets Misery, with a dash of millennial séance via Richie Richards, a medium who dances on the edge of illusion and truth.

Jacqueline Moran’s storyline adds a melancholic grace, unfolding in a mental health clinic where transformation feels both fragile and fierce. The way these lives intertwine is quietly breathtaking—like watching ink bleed across a page, forming patterns you didn’t expect but can’t look away from.

Siragher’s prose is thoughtful and atmospheric, with just enough bite to keep you turning pages. It took me a moment to settle in, but once I did, I was glad I stayed. This is a story about creation, consequence, and the ghosts we carry—whether we write them down or not.

Recommended for readers who crave literary thrillers with soul, and stories that ask: what if the price of failure is more than we imagined?

With thanks to Ian Siragher, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC.
