Description
We often overlook the power of sleep--until we struggle to get enough of it. Our culture glorifies productivity and achievement, yet millions suffer from chronic exhaustion, stress, and anxiety. If we could sleep better, could we live better?
Ken Wytsma, an educator who has grappled with chronic illness, insomnia, and years of fragmented rest, believes we can. In this compassionate and empowering guide, he
● reframes sleep not just as a health necessity but as a foundation for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being;
● explains the surprising connection between rest and creativity, happiness, and resilience; and
● offers concrete strategies for repatterning the thoughts and habits that keep us awake.
A natural storyteller, Wytsma blends research with personal reflection to explore why modern life makes rest so elusive and what happens in our bodies and minds when we finally surrender to sleep. For those ready to take action, he offers practical wisdom for overcoming sleep struggles, including ten practical approaches for reclaiming the sleep you long for.
This encouraging and fascinating guide will help you escape the cycle of exhaustion and rediscover the joy of a well-rested life.

“Experiencing better sleep changes everything: from creativity and productivity to the quality of relationships and the satisfaction of the soul. Ken Wytsma has walked the arduous terrain of sleeplessness and come out on the other side with empathy, insight, and practical wisdom. “Sleep disorders are one of the major causes of chronic disease among the general population—affecting millions—yet they remain undertreated. This book is essential for understanding the impact sleep quality and quantity has on our health and well-being. I give this book my highest recommendation and commend Ken Wytsma on his ability to communicate our need for good sleep in a way that is both compelling and clear.”—Kerry Kuehl, MD, DrPH, MS, director of Human Performance Laboratory, Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU)
“The Sleep You’re Longing For spoke to my heart. Women often pour themselves out for others—hosting, caring, creating beauty and comfort for our families—and forget that rest is its own kind of hospitality. Ken Wytsma invites us to slow down and rediscover the sacred art of rest, showing how sleep restores not only our bodies but also our homes, relationships, and sense of joy. This book is a gentle guide back to wholeness that we can actually live and share.”—Sandy Coughlin, creator of ReluctantEntertainer.com; author of Big Boards for Families
“Ken has done some amazing things with his life, and you’d never know that good sleep has often eluded him. His openness here is a gift. This book reminds us that everyone wrestles with something unseen, and rest is essential to our health, relationships, and joy. His insights are practical, humble, and completely relatable—a road map to rest that reminds us we sleep well so we can serve well.”—Roy Goble, author of the Junkyard Wisdom books; cofounder of PathLight International
“A personal yet universal quest for rest. With heart, head, and poetry, Wytsma shows us that sleep is not just a thing we must do but a gateway to human flourishing, intertwined with the meaning of our days as much as our nights.”—Marc Wagner, MD, MPH

The Sleep You Are Longing For is a helpful and calming book. It shares practical advice that is easy to understand and apply. Some parts felt repetitive, but the overall message was encouraging. I liked how the book focused on realistic habits rather than quick fixes. There was nothing groundbreaking in the book but good information and reminders. Overall, it was a good read for anyone wanting better sleep.
I really struggle with sleeping so this book was a must read for me. It was very interesting and gave me lots of information about sleep. It had many hints and tips on how to improve my sleep and how I’m being affected by my lack of it.
I liked how the book was laid out and I found the key takeaway points at the end of each chapter a great help.
Thanks to NetGalley, Ken Wytsma and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
