Description

Sometimes life is not fair! In this second book in the Ly-Lan Finds A Way chapter book series about a daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, Ly-Lan navigates the school book fair—complete with anticipation and disappointment, surprising injustices (why did prices go up?), and finding a way to thrive.

Ly-Lan couldn‘t be more excited for the book fair to come to her school. She’s going to buy the latest book in her favorite series, The Adventures of Pizza Head, two cute posters, and some pencils with squishy tops. But when she realizes that not all kids have money to buy books at the Book Fair, she wonders if the Book Fair is actually fair. At Sunday School, Ly-Lan learns that God is always just and fair, and wonders how she can help make it fair for everyone at school. Ly-Lan wants to help but that’s turning out to be much more difficult than she imagined. But if there’s one thing she’s good at, it’s solving problems.

This audiobook was wonderful. I absolutely loved the storyline and the meaningful lessons woven throughout the story. It’s a great read for younger readers, especially those who attend school and are familiar with the excitement of a book fair.

I really appreciate how the author made the story so relatable for children. Themes of sharing, gentleness, and kindness were beautifully incorporated into the plot, making the message both engaging and impactful.

Bonus: This read includes very cute and fun humor!

I have to start by saying I didn’t realise this was under the Christian section and, when I noticed it, I was slightly worried about how preachy it would be. I was very positively surprised! This book clearly respects its readers, and avoids beating them over the head with the message it’s trying to convey.

Ly-Lan is a great main character, and she mirrors very good traits for young people to have: she is curious and inquisitive; she cares about people around her; she admits her wrongdoings and she strives to be better. She’s relatable in a way that shows the author has contact with children her age and knows how they act — especially when it comes to problem solving.

I loved the writing in this, as well. The author characterises the cast with clarity, not wasting one scene, and the dialogue flows in impeccable manner. It felt very refreshing to read!

The tidbits in Vietnamese were also quite interesting, and I enjoy how this novel portrays a very diverse setting and a community that helps itself mutually.

The voice acting was just stunning (with the exception of CC’s unbearably high pitched voice). The narration is perfect for Ly-Lan’s voice, and the differentiation between characters was very clear.

Ly-Lan is a third grader taking on extra responsibilities. She’s also learning that life isn’t always fair. She does have a heart for Jesus, amazing friends, family and Sunday School teacher. This was a great read about everyday life as a third grader. Outstanding narrator and I highly recommend.

I was blessed with an audio ARC. Thank you NetGalley and Zonderkidz. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased.

This was a delightful read. There are a lot of lessons to be learned for the reader. Perfect for parents wanting to teach their children about fairness, money, and how not to assume things without having the facts.
