Description

To change the fates design, Sybil Wyntres—once a child without magic—watches her friend be mutilated in a ritual meant to grant her the power she lacked. Now, serving as a Warden for the Portcullis, she vows to make her life mean something. Until a jagged shard of her past resurfaces, shining light on the corruption that runs far deeper than the monsters below the Nether Peaks.

Far beneath the surface, an enslaved Etched named Raekin serves the Void Born who carved obedience into his bones. Bound by runes he cannot break and commanded by a master he cannot defy, Raekin becomes a weapon sent against the very world that abandoned him. But whispers of a way to break his chains circulate, carried by the hand of an ancient enchanter, he vows to free the Etched from their binds.

When their paths cross, truth and vengeance collide and the fate of the continent shifts with them.

Advance Praise

Wrought In Flesh is unflinching dark fantasy that does far more than simply examine power. It engraves its themes straight into the story, much like the runes cut into its characters’ bones. The magic system alone makes it worth picking up. It incorporates runes carved into living bodies, obedience written into marrow, people shaped into weapons by deliberate design. The result is a narrative that feels brutal, intimate, and disturbingly logical within the world Price creates. That said, this is not a gentle read. The body-horror elements are very real.

Speaking of worldbuilding, the realm Price shapes feels suffocating. Hope flickers but it is blade-thin and painfully earned. Failure is frequent, and survival is never promised. Rituals are used to brand magic onto the unmarked, often through calculated mutilation, and this cruelty is not merely tolerated—it is sanctioned, even politically shielded. The magic and the landscape mirror one another: breathtaking in their beauty, savage in their design, and utterly without mercy.

The character development is exceptionally handled. Raekin and Sybil stand at the heart of the story, their parallel paths gradually converging until they become the emotional and thematic axis of the novel. One is powerless within a powerful institution; the other possesses immense power yet no autonomy of her own. Together, they personify the book’s central question: what does freedom truly mean when authority is carved into your very flesh?

Overall, this is a dark fantasy that fully commits to its premise. It’s deliberately uncomfortable, and that unease is part of its power. If you’re drawn to morally weighty stories, body-bound magic, and characters struggling against the systems that control them, this one is likely to linger beneath your skin long after the final page.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Extremely well put together, great plot. nice and unique events.

The horror aspect was impeccable! There is death, gore and guts. The magical elements with the runes and how they were forced. Goodness, I loved it.
