Description
A heart-warming and moving memoir for dog lovers everywhere from one of Britain’s best-loved writers and journalists.
“Nobody will ever love you like a dog. Nobody will ever be as consistently happy to see you. Nobody will ever make you so glad to be alive”
It all started when nine-year-old Jasmine wanted a dog and her parents, Tony and Yuriko, tried to fob her off with a rabbit. In the end, along came Stan, a bandy-legged bundle of joy, loyalty and bright red fur. And nothing like a rabbit. Set against the backdrop of Tony’s life in Hampstead and their daily walks across the Heath, with its rolling hills, ponds and cast of star-studded, dog-walking neighbours – this is a poignant, funny and deeply human memoir about a special relationship with a four-legged friend.
Full of Tony’s reliably moving, wise and heartfelt writing, Man & Dog: A Love Story captures the ineffable bond between a man and his dog.

‘Man & Dog ; A Love Story’, by Tony Parsons, is an emotional rollercoaster of an account of the joys and sadness of being owned by a dog.The experiences recounted by the author surely ring true for millions of dog people all over the world. From a personal perspective it seems vividly reminiscent of our own family’s cherished memories of our beloved pets.I’m not sure if the same bonds would exist between humans and other household animals, but in my opinion this most definitely applies to the canine variety .
‘Stan’, is for the writer, like a baby who never leaves home and is completely dependent throughout the span of life.Rather than being a burden as once feared prior to his adoption into the family, Stan enhances their existence completely. He is an ever faithful companion ,fitness trainer, psychologist, motivator ,and wise counsellor on facing up to the finite nature of life, without undue angst or being overwhelmed by the drama of loss.Living life fully only in the present moment.
This appreciation of a truly loved dog, is a remarkable and uplifting memorial of man’s best friend.

I knew I would love this as soon as I heard Tony had written about his beloved Stan. I also knew, having sobbed my heart out at the beautiful tribute Tony wrote about Stan at the end of his last book, that I would be sobbing again.
This book is is especially poignant for me as I have also loved and lost my best doggie friend. What I didn't realise was 2 days after we said goodbye to Oscar, Tony was doing the same with Stan. Oscar was 2 years older than Stan and had a wonderful life. But still a devastating loss.
Its a simple story, deciding to get a dog, choosing your puppy, the wonderful days spent together, remembering their funny ways (and disgusting habits), and then, inevitably, the decline and end. Heartbreaking. And yes I sobbed. For Tony and Stan but for myself and my lovely boy.
So if you love dogs this is a must read.
The good news is Stan lives on in Tony's Max Wolfe books. I would love Tony to get another dog but I don't think he will. I couldn't live without my hairy best friends despite knowing what will come.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
