Description

She forecasts Red Flag Warnings for a living.

Now she's dating one.

As a meteorologist, Iris O'Hara spends her days forecasting the weather and issuing warnings to keep people safe. She never expected the biggest hazard would be Hector Madeira—a brooding park ranger, military veteran, and the human embodiment of a red flag warning. Iris stumbles upon the body of a missing woman, bringing Hector into the fold, but his permanent scowl and a suspicious amount of flannel make it hard to concentrate on anything else when they are forced into close proximity.

When a wildfire tears through the national park where he's stationed, Hector and Iris must work together. But as the fire spreads and secrets ignite, they’ll have to decide which burns hotter — the wildfire outside, or the one between them.

She forecasts Red Flag Warnings for a living.

Now she's dating one.

As a meteorologist, Iris O'Hara spends her days forecasting the weather and issuing warnings to keep people safe. She never...

This is book is like nothing I have read before. It's a meteorologist romance and it has suspense that builds and a little bit of spice. I enjoyed the weather reading aspects.

Red Flag Warning is a strong start to the Cupid Meets Crime Scene series, offering a well-balanced mix of romance and suspense. It takes a familiar opposites-attract dynamic and places it in a high-stakes environment, where both emotional and literal danger are constantly present.
Iris O’Hara is a refreshing protagonist. Her career as a meteorologist is not just a background detail but an integral part of the story, influencing both the plot and the pacing. Her analytical mindset and focus on safety contrast effectively with the unpredictability of the situation she finds herself in. She is practical, observant, and grounded, which makes her perspective feel credible throughout.
Hector Madeira fits firmly into the brooding, guarded archetype, but with enough depth to keep him engaging. As a park ranger and military veteran, his connection to the land and his sense of duty are clear. His reserved nature and persistent intensity create a steady tension, particularly when paired with Iris’s more direct and pragmatic approach.
The romance builds gradually, leaning into a slow-burn dynamic that prioritises tension and character development over immediacy. Their interactions are layered with both friction and attraction, and the forced proximity element is used effectively without feeling repetitive. The chemistry is present from the start but develops in a way that feels earned.
The suspense element adds a compelling edge to the narrative. The discovery of a body early on introduces a darker thread that runs alongside the romance, while the wildfire setting elevates the urgency. The environmental danger is not just a backdrop—it actively shapes the story, influencing decisions, pacing, and emotional intensity.
Thematically, the novel explores control versus unpredictability, both in nature and in relationships. The metaphor of the “red flag warning” works on multiple levels, reflecting both the literal wildfire risk and the emotional risks tied to Hector’s character.

Red Flag Warning did what I thought it would do; it provided an entertaining romantic suspense. As soon as I read about the premise of a meteorologist (who literally predicts dangers) falls for a "walking red flag" of a man, I knew I was going to enjoy this.

I thoroughly enjoyed Iris. She felt intelligent, capable, and unlike most Female Main Characters, she has a STEM background. Also, Hector? He's a total Grumpy/Sunshine Park Ranger with a great deal of Brooding Energy. But beneath all of that Brooding Energy, he is surprisingly Soft which allowed me to grow to appreciate him much more than I thought I would.

Their Sun/Grumpy Dynamic & Forced Proximity were engaging enough to keep me invested throughout.

The Suspense aspect of the story was equally well done. A Body being found at the very start of the book grabbed my attention quickly, then the Mystery continued to keep me wondering. The Wildfire Setting also brought a great amount of Tension and Urgency to every scene — creating a sense of Chaos and Haste that worked perfectly in this case.

My biggest issue with the story is that there are some sections where things seemed to be moving rapidly and I felt that both the Romance and the Resolution of the Mystery were somewhat underdeveloped in those areas.

All-in-all, I'd give it approximately 4 stars. I think Red Flag Warning is a wonderful combination of Romance, Suspense and a touch of Chaos. If you're interested in reading Romantic Thrillers with a Grumpy/Sunshine theme or Man In Uniform stories that are quick-moving, Red Flag Warning will certainly be an enjoyable addition to your collection.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this arc.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC.

Romantic suspense novels have quickly become one of my favorite genres. This one was a hit for me. This book follows Iris, a meteorologist and Hector a park ranger and military veteran. They have a slow burn romance which I really enjoyed. Their character development is so good. This had a fact paced plot. This was a really good book and I had a hard time putting it down. Such a page turner.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I found Red Flag Warning to be such an addictive and thoroughly enjoyable read and a fantastic introduction to Allison Bettes as a new to me author. From the very first chapter I was hooked, and I genuinely struggled to put this one down reading way to late into the night!
The concept felt fresh and engaging blending romance, suspense, and a high stakes natural disaster setting in a way that kept the tension building throughout. The wildfire backdrop added a real sense of urgency and danger and paired with the mystery element made for a gripping, fast paced read.
I absolutely loved the dynamic between Iris and Hector. The forced proximity, the tension and that slow shift from suspicion to something much deeper was so well done. Hector especially had that brooding, guarded edge that made him such a compelling character, while Iris brought a strong, capable presence that balanced him perfectly. Their chemistry simmered from the start and only intensified as the story unfolded.
What really stood out for me was how seamlessly the romance and suspense were woven together. It never felt like one overshadowed the other and both elements worked hand in hand to keep me completely invested.
As the first book in a series this sets things up brilliantly. It felt complete and satisfying while still leaving me really excited for what’s to come next. I’ll definitely be continuing with this series and keeping an eye out for more from this author.
Overall it was a gripping, high energy read that delivered on both tension and romance and I absolutely loved it. 📚✨

The premise of this book is very compelling (I’ve worked in wildland fire) and the plot flowed well, but everyone needs an editor. The writing style didn’t hold my attention; readers don’t need a play-by-play in description and dialogue. It slows the pacing for what should be a fast-paced book.

I liked the characters and once the suspense part ramped up (about 3/4 in), it moved much quicker.

I always appreciate the work that a book takes and I think this author will continue to find her voice.

A truly lovely book. I really enjoyed the tension between Iris and Hector but also the crime/mystery subplot. I finished the book in only four hours which is very rare considering I’m dyslexic and usually need a while to get through books. The book is very fast paced which felt a bit rushed at times but honestly helped me personally in actually staying immersed in the plot and characters, my only true complaint would be that the dialogue was often only explained not written out but that is a personal preference.
The book made me laugh many times especially Nancy and I loved all the little banter between the Characters, and the bits of German made me smile as a German myself.
A huge thank you to NetGalley for supplying me with a copy of Red Flag Warning it was truly a good time.

This one wastes no time pulling you in—it’s sharp, smoky, and just dangerous enough to keep your pulse up the entire way through. What starts as a clever “she studies red flags, he is one” premise quickly evolves into a high-stakes romantic suspense that balances tension and chemistry with impressive control.

Iris is an absolute standout. Smart, capable, and just self-aware enough to know she’s walking straight into trouble, she brings both humor and grounded realism to the story. Her career as a meteorologist isn’t just a quirky detail—it actively shapes the narrative, adding urgency and a unique lens to the unfolding danger. She reads the sky for a living, but it’s the people around her she struggles to predict—and that contrast works beautifully.

Hector, meanwhile, is exactly the kind of character you shouldn’t trust—and that’s what makes him so compelling. Brooding without being flat, guarded without being cold, he carries the weight of his past in a way that slowly unravels rather than being handed over all at once. The tension between what he shows and what he hides keeps both Iris and the reader constantly guessing.

The chemistry? Immediate, but not easy. Their dynamic thrives on friction—banter, suspicion, reluctant teamwork—and the forced proximity during a literal wildfire only intensifies everything. The external danger mirrors their internal push-and-pull perfectly, creating a story where every moment feels like it could tip into either disaster or something deeper.

And the suspense element delivers. The mystery surrounding the missing woman adds a darker edge, while the wildfire itself is more than just a backdrop—it’s a living, breathing threat that raises the stakes in every scene. The pacing reflects that urgency, building heat (in every sense) as the story progresses.

If you’re into romances where the danger feels real, the attraction feels a little risky, and the characters have just enough baggage to make things messy—in a good way—this one hits the mark. It’s tense, atmospheric, and quietly addictive, with just enough emotional depth to balance the burn.

I was immediately drawn to this book, based not only on the cover but also on the “Bones” vibes I got from the description. However, while this book delivered on the romance front, the thriller aspect was overshadowed, leaving my final rating at a 3.75⭐️ (with heavy optimism for the other books)!

Iris O’Hara works as a meteorologist and public outreach specialist in Las Vegas, Nevada, where her primary aim is to issue warnings to keep people safe. During a routine outreach interview, Iris finds her path crossing with the grumpy, brooding, ex-special ops/LVPD park ranger, Hector Madeira. Despite Iris’ attraction to Hector, he seems to want nothing more than to get her out of his national park. Unfortunately, when Iris *literally* stumbles upon the bones of a missing woman, they’re forced into close quarters as the killer sets their sights on Iris.

I think the romance aspect was well-written, especially considering the two main characters knew each other previously, and they are nontraditional romance leads. Their relationship progresses with realism, and their communication is direct. Iris’ optimism and STEM knowledge at odds with Hector’s military and law enforcement background provide the perfect foundation for the “Grumpy-sunshine” trope. However, I do think one of the reasons I flew through this book so quickly was because I was waiting for the plot to refocus or build up the thriller aspect.

Both characters felt relatable in a sense - Iris being more curvy and having a tad of internalized fear about that in relationships, and Hector’s distance as it pertained to his PTSD from his time in the army/LVPD. I will say I didn’t find Hector to be a true morally grey/red flag MMC, but I do think his own perception of this was important to the growth he achieved by the epilogue. Additionally, the side characters (especially Sarge!) were so much fun! I wish we had seen a little more of them, even interacting with the two main characters as a couple or separately!

At the end, when the serial killer aspect was reintroduced, and we had reached a boiling point in Iris and Hector’s relationship, I think the story truly hit its stride. The multilayered tension and onset of a wildfire really helped propel the story into a new bracket.

I plan to continue the “Cupid Meets Crime Scene” series and highly recommend anyone who is a fan of Bones (or any other science-focused TV crime drama) pick up the vibrant books Allison Bettes has poured her heart into!

I liked the idea of this a lot more than the execution. The whole premise is really good, meteorologist FMC, broody park ranger MMC, romantic suspense, wildfire setting… it had everything to be a 4–5 star read for me. And to be fair, it was entertaining and easy to get through.

I did like the dynamic between Iris and Hector. The grumpy/sunshine + forced proximity works, and I liked that their communication felt more direct than usual. Their chemistry was there, just not as strong as I expected.

My main issue is that the thriller/suspense side felt a bit underdeveloped. It starts strong, but then kind of fades into the background for most of the book, and only really picks up again towards the end, which ends up feeling rushed.

Because of that, both the mystery and parts of the romance didn’t feel as deep as they could’ve been.

I also felt like the pacing was a bit off at times... either too slow with unnecessary details or too fast when things actually mattered.

First of all… thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC 💌 all thoughts are my own (and a little unhinged).

This book??? A grumpy park ranger x sunshine meteorologist romance set in a literal NATIONAL PARK with a MURDER MYSTERY running through it???

Yeah. I was sat.

Iris is a STEM queen forecasting danger for a living and somehow still walks straight into the biggest red flag of them all… Hector. Broody, closed-off, “I am not relationship material” Hector. And yet… the way this man folds??? Delicious.

The grumpy/sunshine dynamic absolutely carried. Their chemistry felt natural, not forced, and I loved how their relationship built through trust instead of just instant heat. It felt grounded, which made the emotional moments hit harder.

And the suspense element?? Not just there for vibes. It actually mattered. The murder investigation and wildfire setting kept the pacing tight and gave the romance real stakes. Like… nothing says bonding like potential death and unresolved feelings.

✨ What I loved:
• Grumpy x sunshine done RIGHT
• Strong, smart FMC in STEM (we love a brainy queen)
• Protective, emotionally constipated MMC who slowly melts
• Mystery + romance balance that actually works
• Side characters that added depth (Sarge deserves rights)

💭 Why 4 stars and not 5:
There were a few moments where I wanted more emotional depth from Hector earlier on, and some parts of the suspense could’ve hit just a little harder. Still a super solid, addictive read.

Overall, this was fun, engaging, and lowkey bingeable. The kind of book where you look up and suddenly it’s 2am and your life is in shambles.

If you love:
🚩 grumpy/sunshine
🚩 forced proximity
🚩 romantic suspense
🚩 protective MMCs
🚩 “he falls harder but fights it first” energy

…you’re gonna eat this up.

Iris is a meteorologist who forecasts red flag warnings for a living. When she goes out on location with two of her colleagues/friends for work and a simple tumble over some rocks triggers a murder investigation. First on the scene is Park Ranger Hector. Iris and Hector have briefly met before at Iris' sister's wedding. Whilst Iris has always found Hector extremely attractive, Hector has always been Grumpy and abrupt towards Iris.

When Iris' apartment is broken into, she calls Hector believing it could be related to the murder investigation. Hector runs to her aide and tells her she can stay with him while her apartment is a crime scene. Spending more time with Iris, Hector starts to actually feel happy and begins to smile - a lot! It then becomes abundantly clear that the feeling is very mutual but Hector regards himself as a red flag hence why he tries to keep Iris at a distance but with the murder investigation proceeding, he is keeping her as close as he can.

The action around the murder investigation ramps it up with some violence and arson which reveals the killer being discovered towards the end.

Alison Bettes has written this from a dual character narrative - FMC and MMC. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter from It's Science add a really nice touch and fit well with the fact that when Iris is nervous, she reels off random facts to do with the weather. Along with the humour, wit and banter between all the characters, it executes this psychological thriller/suspenseful romance perfectly. Iris and Hector getting their happy ending is literally the best ending that could have been envisaged.
