Description
FBI Agent Laura Sellers and her partner Daren Smith are called to the quiet Appalachian town of Burnsville to investigate a string of brutal murders. Lurking in the shadows is the killer himself—soon to be called the Viper—stalking the Burnsville forests. Each victim is gutted and marked with a large, carved V.
Balancing her personal life and the investigation, Laura is drawn into a twisted game of cat and mouse. As the Viper stages gruesome tableaus and taunting messages, Laura’s sanity and resolve are pushed to the brink.
In this fast-paced psychological thriller, Laura races against time to uncover the Viper’s identity before he strikes again. As the line between hunter and hunted blurs, one question remains: will she catch the Viper—or become his next victim?
Thriller fans will find The Viper: Birth of Chaos an exhilarating ride.

*The Viper* by Caroline Butler is a gripping and well-paced read with plenty of tension and intrigue. The story unfolds in a way that keeps you hooked, and the characters add depth and complexity. A compelling book that’s hard to put down.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Caroline Butler, and Indigo River Publishing for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Caroline Butler doesn’t ease her way into the thriller genre. Rather, she makes all the noise she can and lets the world hear her! This debut is lean, vicious, and unrelenting, introducing a killer who is as methodical as he is grotesque. It may read like a novella, but there’s nothing slight about its impact.
From the opening discovery of a mutilated body carved with the Viper’s signature, Butler wastes no time establishing stakes. FBI Agent Laura Sellers, still finding her footing, is thrown into a case that demands precision she hasn’t fully mastered yet. Paired with a seasoned partner, she’s forced to navigate not just a brutal investigation, but her own instincts—ones that don’t always steer her safely. That tension, between ambition and inexperience, gives the narrative an edge that cuts deeper than the violence alone.
The pacing is razor-sharp. Short chapters snap by like ticking seconds, each one tightening the noose as the Viper stays just out of reach. Butler understands momentum and uses it well, crafting a story that’s difficult to put down and even harder to predict. There’s a grim, almost clinical brutality to the murders that will stick with readers, balanced by a psychological thread that hints at something more layered beneath the surface.
That said, the book’s greatest strength—its brevity—is also its most noticeable limitation. There are moments where the investigation feels compressed, where a deeper dive into the procedural work or the killer’s psyche could have elevated the tension from sharp to suffocating. The bones of something bigger are clearly here, as you can feel the story straining against its own limits.
Agent Sellers is a compelling anchor. Flawed, determined, and occasionally out of her depth, she brings a human element to an otherwise relentless hunt. The supporting cast does its job, but it’s the interplay between hunter and hunted that lingers most. The Viper, in particular, is drawn with just enough detail to unsettle, leaving room for future exploration that feels both promising and necessary.
This debut reads like a warning shot. Butler has the control, the pacing, and the instinct to build something far more expansive, and this feels like the opening move in a larger, darker game. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be—it’s sharp, confident, and leaves you wanting more. And in this genre, that’s exactly the point.
Kudos, Madam Butler, for a wonderful introduction into your world and this series!

Caroline Butler’s *The Viper* is a gripping and atmospheric read that blends suspense with richly drawn characters. From the opening chapters, the story pulls you into a tense and unpredictable world, where danger feels ever-present and motivations are rarely straightforward.
One of the novel’s strongest elements is its pacing. Butler knows how to build tension effectively, layering clues and twists in a way that keeps the reader engaged without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. The plot unfolds with just enough mystery to keep you guessing, and several turns genuinely catch you off guard.
The characters are another highlight. The protagonist is compelling and flawed, making their journey feel authentic and emotionally grounded. Even the secondary characters are given enough depth to feel real, rather than serving as simple plot devices. Butler does a particularly good job of exploring trust, loyalty, and the consequences of past decisions.
That said, the book isn’t without its minor drawbacks. At times, certain plot developments feel slightly convenient, and a few sections could have benefitted from tighter editing to maintain the story’s momentum. However, these issues don’t significantly detract from the overall experience.
Overall, *The Viper* is a strong and entertaining novel that will appeal to fans of suspense and character-driven storytelling. With its engaging narrative and well-crafted tension, it’s an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a thrilling read with emotional depth.
What did I just read? My heart's still pounding hard as I write this review.
The Viper is a fantastic read - sharp, tense, thrilling, and fast. Each chapter grips you, and before you know it, you've completed the story. The story follows FBI Laura Sellers as she tries to track down a psychotic serial killer. I liked the fact that Laura was not a perfect person and had faults and issues of her own.
To start with, we are introduced to the killer quite early on. The author shows the childhood of the killer and how he turned out to be someone who enjoys killing people. It's quite scary to think that there could be people like the Viper in real life. Each time I read the Viper's POV, I found myself feeling extremely unsettled and freaked out.
I knew this story would be the start of a series; however, I assumed there would be a new story in each book. At the end of the book, I realised that the next book would follow the same story with the police trying to capture the killer. I was slightly put off, as I expected the Viper to be caught by the end, so the ending did take me by surprise.
This book, in many ways, reminded me of Ice Child by Camilla Lackberg, but with much better writing and tension.
The Viper is a fast-paced book with extremely good writing, characters, and plot, leaving you wound up and wanting more long after you finish. I can already tell that this series is going to be one hell of a thrilling ride!
Thank you so much for giving me a chance to read this thrilling book!
