Description
Owls have been a source of fascination and awe throughout history. In Indian folklore, owls represent wisdom and helpfulness, while in Ancient Greece they were seen as a good omen if sighted before a battle. Today, owls are often kept as pets by bird lovers, and can be found in woodland and forests from the Canadian Arctic to the deserts of the Arabian peninsula. Full of fun facts and expert insights, Owls introduces these iconic birds in all their variety. Did you know that owls can rotate their necks 270 degrees, or that an owl’s ears are asymmetrical? Or that owls are considered apex predators? Or that the tiniest owl in the world is the Elf Owl, a mere 12cm (5 inches) tall, while the largest North American owl is the Great Gray Owl at 80cm (32 inches) tall. Or that Barn Owls swallow their prey whole – skin, bones, and all – and they eat up to a thousand mice each year.
With chapters divided into type of owl – Barn & Grass Owls, Typical Owls, Snowy, Horned and Eagle Owls, Wood Owls, Pygmy Owls, and Owlets and Nesting – this book is a concise examination of these superb aerial hunters in over 200 vivid photographs.

Owls are mysterious, intrepid, stealthy, and utterly fascinating. This book is eye opening with interesting facts about owls found all over the world, at least 254 species. The 200+ striking photographs are extremely detailed, down to the fringed-edged feathers. Chapters are divided into types of owl with information such as habitat, facts, hearing, ranges, clutch sizes, feeding, hunting, and unique qualities. Amongst some, owls have mythological connections and even negative connotations. In common with most other creatures, they can be fiercely protective of their babies, even to the point of causing people injuries. But the more I see them, the more I yearn to learn about these mesmerizing creatures, many of which mate for life and are capable of extraordinary feats.
One of my favourite pastimes is to observe owls. I am fortunate to have nightly visits just outside our house by the little owl, Eurasian scops owl, and Eurasian eagle owl which can be quite a cacophony along with other nocturnal birds! From this book I learned about species I hadn't heard of before such as the pharaoh owl which can eat scorpions, the distinctive barred eagle owl, and Chaco owl.
For those intrigued by anything owl related, this is an unmissable book. It took me into lovely deep dives, something I appreciate very much.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I loved this great new book about different kinds of owls. The book's highlights for sure are the excellent photography seen throughout the book, with information about each species.

Owls by David Alderton is a breathtaking exploration of the diversity of owl species and their behaviour in their natural habitats. The photographs, which show various kinds of owl behaviours such as hunting, sleeping, eating, and parenting, are the most stunning I've seen to date. The book's text concisely provides context for these behaviours and makes note of distinctive physical features. Information is provided in bite-sized paragraphs that are accessible not just for adults but for upper-elementary-aged children, as well.
I would recommend this book to wildlife photograpy enthusiasts and anyone who has a special interest in owls.
