From the first page, this is a novel full of huge grins and belly laughs. For any readers worried about the school year ahead, this is an absolute ideal end of summer holidays read. Arthur faces a lot of the same issues most of us faced in school, and handles them in a way younger readers will enjoy!

With exceptional illustrations from Dominic Trevett that bring an extra dose of fun to an already lively recollection of a disastrous journey to detention, this is a book that can be read in one sitting or across as many days as the story itself. A genius comedic new take on a whodunnit for the middle grade audience!

Sam Copeland’s writing practically bounces from sentence to sentence through this joyous adventure. His understanding of younger audiences and what they’ll find funny, points of reference they’ll relate to, situations they’ll experience is masterful and a large part of why I see so many people LOVING Detention Diaries.

With a wonderful cast of characters (including my favourites Arthur Dog and Carlos Chickens) and the encompassing mystery of the axolotl (like the one to the left), this is a MUST read this August. If you want the sound of laughter filling your home, make sure you get a copy!

Charlie Changes into a Chicken has been one of my favorite series for that age group because it is SO FUNNY. I’ve sold heaps. But Uma and the Answer to Absolutely Everything and The Underpants of Chaos both really disappointed me.

But with this one, Sam Copeland has found his vibe again. This was SO funny! I did not like the chapter with all the barfing, but I’m not the audience for this book and I think they will think it is funny. I really loved how the author played with words in this story.

I also think that with the illustrations and the layout, the book will speak to the audience.

I highly recommend this and I’m looking forward to the next installment!
