Description

Seven days. Four deaths. One chance to catch a killer.

Sixteen-year-old Robert arrives home late. Without a word to his dad, he goes up to his bedroom. Robert is never seen alive again.

The discovery of a body on the coast of the Scottish Highlands plunges Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy into a murder investigation that won't begin and end with one death.

Meanwhile, seventeen-year-old Nichol has been missing for seven days. His last message was to social worker Michael, who can't quite shake the suspicion that something is terribly wrong.

As Monica is faced with catching a murderer who has been meticulously watching and waiting, Michael keeps searching for Nichol, desperate to find him before the killer claims another victim.

i thought the weather had suddenly turned bad when the i looked up to a very much light change and needing to put the light on. ermm no, it appears i may have read and been so invested that it had simply turned to night time!
this was such a nerves trapping and pulse heightening kind of novel. one that fills you with a dread and unease even if you dont quite know why or how.
a young man went missing and his body then found. and clearly there was more to his death. in charge of the investigation into this is DI Monica.
we also have Micheal a social worker with a missing boy on his mind.
i love thrillers when they hook me to both the people and plot. i was invested in Monica and Micheal just as much as i was the story they were involved in. that for me is also the brilliant start to a series i will definitely want to follow.
the story continues to get you right in your emotions as more is revealed and that includes more bodies.
desperate to stop more victims but with a fair few things in her way means Monica has to figure out just how much she is willing to push the rules and herself in order to find out exactly what is going on here.
the police procedural aspect was brilliant. it was done in a way that made it so much part of what hooks you in, keeps you informed but never overshadows or makes it clunky and hard to understand.
the atmospheric setting and descriptions only added weight to how this book feels to read. it draws you in even more like you could look around and see where this was all taking place and imagine the characters there. everything just felt so grounded in what could be real world happenings and this only made the story and what occurred here darker and more deeply felt.
the "watcher" only made those chills more goosebumps and was another brilliant touch to what Halliday has created here.
the whole book just had me in its complete grip from start to finish. there was no way i could put it down. there was no way i could possibly shut this book until i found out how it would all play out.
i need more from this author and i need more from these characters pronto!
