Description

The Unifying Forces of Humankind is a “big history” tracing our human journey from prehistory and the earliest civilizations (which believed their cultures were the absolute center of the world), culminating in the telecommunications revolution, which created a global village.

It identifies 11 unifying forces: Talking and Writing, the Spiritual Impulse, the Wheel, Money, Law, Paper and the Printing Press, Intercontinental Trade, Organic Revolution, Measurement of Time, High Speed Transportation, and the Telecommunications Revolution. Dr. Stoffer details how these forces first appeared in human history, combined with each other, and evolved to make us “fully human as one body, mind, and spirit.”

The book is richly illustrated with 190 photos and other illustrations, and is thoroughly documented with references. In his world travels and research, Dr. Stoffer has found that people are more alike than different, possessing a common and compassionate humanity — the fabric of The Unifying Forces and the inspiration for this book.

Advance Praise

“SO MANY HISTORICAL STUDIES FOCUS on conflict, or on the forces that divide humans into various ‘tribes’ based on nationality, religion, or ethnicity. By focusing on the forces that unify our species, Dr. Stoffer offers a refreshing alternative and positive perspective with a ‘big history’ overview of the whole of the human past, focusing on the various beliefs and technologies humans have invented to help us communicate with and better understand each other. The book also bridges the divide between science and faith by arguing that both the priest and the scientist are engaged in a search for truth, and that search will ultimately bring us closer together as a species. The author’s personal touch of wit and humor flavors The Forces with many idiomatic explorations, etymologies, and anecdotes that cut through the usual density of world history.”
