Description
A doomsday cult. A homicide detective on the edge. A bloody and rising body count.
When Detective Chloe Van Belle is pulled from a macabre murder scene at a carnival fun house to investigate a grisly site deep in the Ohio woods, what she finds turns her stomach: an altar of human and animal remains, including the skull of a young child.
Chloe suspects The Hearth—a secretive religious cult obsessed with children and prophecy. Then she uncovers a disturbing pattern of missing children that may tie The Hearth to the trafficking and adoption network she exposed months earlier.
As fear spreads through Halpin River and more people are murdered, the case turns personal. Chloe’s cousin Katie joins The Hearth, convinced her kidnapped son is still alive and living with a new family. And Chloe’s journalist sister Hannah, chasing the story of a lifetime, may be reckless enough to compromise the investigation or get herself killed.
With the cult’s prophecy countdown days away, Chloe must uncover the truth and The Hearth’s plans before more children vanish—or worse—are sacrificed, and her recently reconciled family is swallowed by the carnage.

This one really gripped me!
Cults? Sold!
We follow Detective Chloe Van Belle as she investigates the death and the disappearance of children. The thing is that she immediately suspects the cult called The Hearth.
When Chloe’s cousin joins this “religion” because she is convinced that her son is with them and Chloe’s sister (Hannah), a journalist, starts to chase a story about this things start to get dangerous.
I was on edge of my seat. What a crazy story!

Oh good read! If you like cults, murder, kidnappings this is for you.. when Chole is assigned to investigate a murder in a fun house, she’s lead to a church called The Hearth. This is not a typical church!

So book 4 is going to be released tomorrow, right. . . haha, right!?!?
What an insane job done by Cobie yet again. The Halpin River Homicide Series is so easy to get drawn into, but I highly recommend reading books 1 and 2 first if you want to fully understand everyone and everything going on. There are a lot of moving pieces in these books, and confusion is bound to occur. . . cough cough the epilogue cough cough!
Altar of Silent Bones follows Detective Chloe Van Belle as she goes after a cult called The Hearth, which she knows deep down is connected to the adoption trafficking ring, The Bough, and the homeschool op, The Canopy, that she discovered during her last case. Unfortunately, those cases were never fully closed, leaving Chloe with even more questions than answers. In order to take down The Hearth and hopefully uncover more information about The Bough and The Canopy, Chloe realizes she isn’t going to be able to gather all the information she needs on her own. So, she is forced to bring in some additional help.
And who better to bring in than her sister, Hannah, and her cousin, Katie? Except Katie already happened to be a step ahead of Chloe.
Katie joins The Hearth in hopes of finding her still-missing son, Felix, but she also wants to uncover more about her father, who is someone the cult worships. Of course, Katie doesn’t exactly tell Chloe what she’s doing right away, because why would anything ever be that easy. She keeps her involvement with The Hearth a secret for a while, putting herself in a dangerous situation while trying to get answers about Felix and her family.
Once Chloe and the Halpin River Police Department become involved, the goal becomes taking down the cult from the inside out. To do so, Hannah gets wired up and joins Katie inside The Hearth so she can relay information and answers back to Chloe and the department. While Chloe may not love Hannah always finding a way to push herself into investigations, especially since she is a journalist, having her go in as an informant ends up being the best option. Because Chloe knows that if she doesn’t let Hannah help, Hannah will probably find a way into the investigation herself anyway—and that could put her in even more danger.
With the hopes that everything will follow the plan they made to take down The Hearth, things are, of course, dangerous and never go directly as planned. Because when has anything in Chloe’s investigations ever gone according to plan? There are twists, secrets, and plenty of moments where you’re left wondering who can actually be trusted. But at least the characters get to have somewhat of a happy moment throughout the book, which is always appreciated considering everything they go through.
That ending, though. . . is definitely a way to make the reader’s mind work overtime, just like everyone in Halpin's River Police Department.
