Description
A Washington and tech insider rings the alarm about America’s misguided approach to reindustrialization and calls for a new solution: “leapfrog innovation.”A Washington and tech insider rings the alarm about America’s misguided approach to reindustrialization and calls for a new solution: “leapfrog innovation.”
The United States once defined the future of technology and manufacturing. Today, we have been leapfrogged by China. Our response has been to pour billions into mature industries where it’s too late to lead: EVs instead of AVs, solar instead of advanced nuclear technology.
This approach is doomed to fail. The only way to win is to leapfrog back. We need to invent our way to the front of the pack and nurture the technologies of the future that will define the twenty-first century.
Josh Zoffer shows how Washington got technology wrong and what it will take to get America on the right track, taking readers on a tour from the White House to the companies building tomorrow’s technologies, including synthetic biology, nuclear fusion, and quantum computing. With illuminating diagnoses and provocative prescriptions for policymakers, businesses, and innovators, Leapfrog makes the urgent case for rediscovering America’s techno-industrial dynamism.
About the Author:
Josh Zoffer is an investor and leads research at CIV, a technology investment firm. He previously served as special assistant to the president for economic policy at the White House and senior advisor to the deputy secretary of the treasury. He lives in Los Angeles.
Advance Praise
"The United States invented the world's most critical technologies, but China is racing to invent the capabilities—fusion energy to quantum computing—that will define the next century. In Leapfrog, Josh Zoffer explains how America built its lead in technology—and what it will take to guarantee this lead for decades to come. Essential reading for understanding the technologies that will define the future." -Chris Miller, author of Chip War: The Fight for the World's Most Critical Technology
"How can the United States win a technology race with China when the other side seems so much stronger in scientific, technological, and organizational capacity? In a sweeping and inspiring study of a century of technological competition, Josh Zoffer argues the only hope for the US to regain the initiative is to leapfrog China, not to be a copycat. Based on the author’s high-flying experience in government and venture capital, Leapfrog also benefits from Zoffer’s keen understanding of the last time American leapfrogged the competition—starting nearly a century ago. We can do it again, says Zoffer." -Niall Ferguson, author of The Square and the Tower and Doom
"Josh Zoffer convincingly argues that no nation in 250 years has reversed its own deindustrialization—and that America must be the first. Drawing on China’s rise and America’s history of innovation, he shows the path back is through a culture of learning-by-doing, risky bets, and an escape from quarterly thinking. A gripping read and a necessary intervention in an urgent debate." -Patrick McGee, author of Apple in China
"Zoffer offers a highly persuasive roadmap for reigniting the moonshot engine that is critical to keeping America at the forefront of innovation. This book is a valuable manual detailing how Washington and Silicon Valley can collaborate to fund, build, and scale the technologies that will secure democratic values and ensure our competitive edge." -Eric Schmidt, KBE, Former Chairman and CEO of Google
"America’s relationship with technology is off track. On the left, big tech is demonized. On the right, there is too much impatience with the catalytic role that government should play. Josh Zoffer is too smart to be captured by either pole of this discussion. The leapfrog strategy that Zoffer proposes—an industrial policy that counters China’s willingness to invest in the potential platforms of the future—is a must read for both sides of the political spectrum. However awesome the power of U.S. capital markets, they are unlikely to nurture transformational inventions in their earliest phases. Zoffer is pulling the fire alarm and telling us how to build the fire department." -Sebastian Mallaby, author of The Power Law and The Infinity Machine
