For more than two decades, homebrewers around the world have turned to Brew Your Own magazine for the best information on making incredible beer at home. Now, for the first time, 300 of BYO’s best clone recipes for recreating favorite commercial beers are coming together in one book.

I love, love, love this book. The Brew Your Own Big Book of Clone Recipes is a must-have for any homebrewer. While I'm sure some of these clone recipes can be found online, the book is packed with pictures, helpful information, and step-by-step instructions. With many of my favorite Vermont beers found within, I know this is a book I'll buy for myself and for homebrewing family members.



Amazon has a sample page you can view, but it doesn't really cover the recipes you'll find within. There are 300 in all, and they include brewers from all over the country. I really got excited by recipes for:





The Alchemist's Focal Banger - Forget Heady Topper, this beer is my favorite! If you like Heady, there's a clone recipe for it, too.
Hill Farmstead's Abner - I wish there had been Edward or Susan, but Abner's not a bad way to go.
Trillium's Fort Point Pale Ale - This is also a must-make beer for me.


There are a few I am dying to try. One of them is Odell's Peach IPA. That's definitely on my list. I've yet to try Treehouse's Julius. When I'm in Massachusetts, the line into the brewery is always way too long to bother with. This clone is very much appreciated.



If you brew, buy this book. If you don't but have been interested in getting started, I would also get this book with Charlie Papazian's The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. One thing is clear, you need to add The Brew Your Own Big Book of Clone Recipes to your library.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from NetGalley for my unbiased opinion of the book.  I really enjoyed this book.  I made the moose knuckle pale ale.  I was impressed how easy it was to do and the taste of the ale was comparable to anything I could have bought in the store.

I don't drink beer, but I have a partner who does. He has extremely strong preferences regarding what he does and does not like, and I can still picture the look of horror on his face when he found out Frosted Frog was no longer available( since buying & drinking it always made his Top Ten List of things to do after hiking vacations in Canada). We live on Long Island, surrounded by water, wineries, and breweries, and after identifying several varieties that he enjoyed, I thought this book might open the door to a fun hobby for him. 
The recipes and instructions are straightforward and easy to follow, even for someone like me with no experience. I have purchased some additional reading materials related to basic research on home brewing for the inexperienced and plan to surprise my significant other with the necessary equipment and ingredients to make one of his favorites, Treehouse's Julius. If he enjoys the results but isn't interested in actually brewing his own, well then I may have found a new hobby, brewing for friends and family.

This book adds another potential skill to my DIY home improvement and vegetable gardening life. A solid 4 stars and potentially 5 after I try some of the recipes.

Nicely organized and richly described, complete with vivid images and understandable step-by-step prose.  A compendium that brings appetite with it.

This book is pretty much exactly as it presents itself- lots of recipe options for replicating your favorite beers at home! 
My husband and I enjoyed browsing the different beers and picking out a few of our preferred brews and breweries along the way. 
Funny thing is, we have all the equipment to start home brewing but the only thing we've made so far is wine! 
"The Brew Your Own Big Book of Clone Recipes" has prodded us to get our beer brewing plans started. Brew Your Own magazine also has a general homebrewing guide that might be worth a look, too.
The pictures are fabulous and the recipes/directions seem pretty intuitive. There are literally hundreds of recipes broken down into seventeen chapters (which are categorized by type), and the book also includes beginner brewing tips and resources.
I definitely recommend this book for novice and seasoned brewers alike!

My father is an aficionado of homebrewing.
Needless to say that when I see this book available on Netgalley, it was too juicy to pass up.
With its clear, easy-to-follow receipe this book has completely won my daddy's heart.

First off, let me say that if this is your bag, you like to home brew, then this book is most definitely for you.  Also, you are going to want the "real" book as opposed to the eBook so you can page through it.  The eBook is good, but the "real" one is better in this instance I believe.

I'm not a big drinker at all.  Maybe once a month, one to two drinks?  And by drink I mean a cider.  Milk probably has more alcohol in it than what I drink.  I normally wouldn't have picked up this book, but it was an invitation from the publisher, so I thought I would give it a try.  I'm into fermenting kombucha and have a book by this publisher on that topic, so thought, "why not?" and gave it a shot.

Let me tell you, you definitely need to have some knowledge going into this book.  There is very little history or explanation of the process of home brewing.  It's assumed you know what you are doing and BAM, right into the recipes.  Intimidating, but not a deal breaker.  It's kind of nice to have someone assume you know what you are doing, instead of needing baby steps for everything.

What won my heart?  Third recipe, gluten free.  I love that those who like beer but can't do gluten are more than a passing thought for those who compiled this book.  Bonus points!

While I don't drink much, my significant other is fond of craft beer, usually the ones that are so thick you can chew them.  Dark and bitter.  So while reading through this book, what did I find but multiple recipes for the brands and specific beers that are favored by my S.O.  BONUS!  And then, at the end, for the light-weights such as me?  Fruit beers!  

All in all, this was a really great book.  Doesn't talk down to the reader and is incredibly comprehensive with the different styles of beer.  If you are into home brewing or know someone who is, this would be very good for you.  A solid 4 stars.

I am going to be honest: my reasons for wanting to read this book were not altruistic. I may live up the street from Labatt’s here in London (Ontario) but I love and adore Yuengling beers: but they are not available in Canada or in Michigan which is only a 1-hour drive away. Luckily, this book gave me ideas on how to brew relative clones to their ales and pilsners along with dozens and dozens of brews that I will make at my local brew club. 
Fabulous book for any fan of beer --- what a great Father’s Day Gift/Book idea!!

This is a reference book of how to brew your own brew. The catalog contains tips, advice and techniques that covers over of 300 recipes. Fabulous

Brought to you by the folks who publish Brew Your Own magazine, this beer bible features 300 clone recipes, put together in cooperation with the original brewers and frequently including tips and tricks of the trade from these brewers. Although the introduction claims that the book is aimed at home brewers of all skill levels, it clearly helps if you have worked with more than just a Mr. Beer kit before. The first chapter, ‘Cloning Basics & Recipe Standards,’ offers a brief guide on how to analyze any commercially available beer to determine the factors that must be present in a successful clone. It also gives instructions on how to best evaluate how your clone recipe stands up to the original brew and any former batches you may have made. Ultimately, with some practice, the home brewer should be able to use these processes to create his or her own clone recipes from scratch. You can see where prior brewing experience and having established a brewing procedure comes in handy.

If you don’t want to bother with the fancy footwork, delve right in by choosing your favorite style of beer from the recipes grouped into 17 different chapters, from IPAs, Porters, and Stouts over Belgian-style and British-style Ales to Brown Ales, Pilsners, European- and North American-style Ales & Lagers to Winter Beers and much more. Every recipe comes in an all-grain or extract with grain version to accommodate personal preference.

The “Big Book” ends with a resource chapter for those needing help or wishing to connect to fellow brewers; here, you find a listing of books, websites, tools & calculations, and message boards/forums for more information. My only beef with this list is the lack of locations where the less established home brewer might find specialty ingredients. At least a couple of suggestions may have been helpful. My personal preference would also have been to give a listing of beers contained in each chapter at the beginning of the chapter instead of just jumping in. Input from my home brewing husband, when he discovered the inclusion of a Pliny the Elder clone: “This might be a cool book to have!”

This looks like a good beginning book to brewing. I have never brewed before and this book makes it look pretty simple, I think. I guess I'll know once I get started! Has lots of recipes for different types of beers. There's even chapters on trouble shooting which is very helpful, imo. I look forward to trying my hand at beer in the near future.

I Loved all of the clone recipes. There are a few of my favorite in there as clones.  Great handbook to have if you like to brew your own!  Going to need to get a hard copy so I have on hand when I feel the need to brew again.

The Brew Your Own Big Book of Clone Recipes is well organized and offers readers well written recipes and suggestions for how to make the results even closer to their personal tastes. The recipes are divided into chapters on beer style (i.e. pale ale, British-style, pilsners, winter beers, and so on). The step by step instructions are clear and easy to follow for anyone that has the basics of home brewing down, but might be a little harder for those just starting in the process. The information offered might be able to be gathered by going through past issues of the magazine and searching online, but having all the recipes and information in one book with plenty of pictures and additional information that can help a home brewer hone their craft is very useful. I think any home brewer could benefit from owning, or at least reading, this book and it just might be the perfect gift for serious or emerging home brewers looking to expand their knowledge.
