I was granted this revised and updated book on netgalley by the publisher. I have to say it positively surprised me. I loved how many healthy vegetarian hamburger options this book has. Even though the majority of the time I eat meat, my mouth was watering from the great pics this book has. I really wanted to get started right away, lots of new ideas! It will get 4 points from me, one point less because I wanted more vegetable hamburger options instead of soy and tvp granules. This book is worth your money and time!

Less a cookbook and more bible on vegetarian burgers, there are a lot of ideas in here that I'd never even considered before. Was highly impressed with the book, the photography is lovely to look at without the end result looking unachievable. The recipes themselves are laid out in a way which is very easy to follow.

Highly recommended.

Wonderful clear, concise and colourful cook book. So straightforward and easy to use, the recipes in the pictures look so appealing and make you want to go and try them out. I’m not a veggie but trying to increase more veggie meals into my diet and this is such a great way to do it. Wonderful inspiration

I cook a lot from scratch, but this cookbook had a lot of speciality ingredients to go along with its recipe. I tend to make recipes from scratch that are a lot more simplistic. Many recipes need something called TVP and wheat gluten. If you use a lot of specialty ingredients, you may enjoy this book as there are a lot of flavors and ideas, it was just not my typical veggie burger.

The pub note says, “Let’s get this patty started,” and I agree! While I used to eat veggie burgers galore, now that I’m married again my hubs makes the best real meat burgers that drip goodness off the plate. But this updated version of THE BEST VEGGIE BURGERS ON THE PLANET may just sway me to return to meat-less ‘wiches.

And OMG do these look fab! There are 100+ recipes for veggie burgers that make the mouth water. Like BLT with Avocado Burger, Pulled "Pork" Sliders, Inside-Out Sushi Burgers, Super Quinoa Burgers, and so much more.

Includes budget-friendly tips, a "fast-food” section that recreates your fave drive-through burgers, and newer techniques such as slow cooker and air fryer. Yum! Veggie burgers here I come! 5/5

This book is pure bliss. As a vegetarian (aspiring to be vegan again) for over 17 years I have yet to find the "perfect" veggie burger. I don't know how I missed the first version of this book, but am very grateful to have found the updated version! There are so many options of burgers (and some other types of sandwiches, dips and sides) that it's almost overwhelming- in a good way! This book definitely does not lack in variety- from bean based burgers to nut based to grain based to extra "meaty" burgers there is something for everyone. I love that the author includes a little note on each recipe on how to make it vegan if it isn't already. The pictures are fantastic! Excuse me while I go to the kitchen to start experimenting! Let me first say that I am not a vegan, but I'm trying to drastically reduce my intake of animal produce for health reasons, and I've been looking for a book like this for ages. I love veggies and I love burgers and patties, but without a guide it's difficult to create new recipes and vary one's own diet, especially with veggie food (you may end up eating always the same salad, the same steamed veggies, etc.). I've also got an old edition of this title, and in my opinion this new one is greatly improved both visually and in the way the content is structured.
The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet, revised and updated contains plenty of recipes for all tastes, which I believe will appeal also the meat-lovers, they're divided by sections according to the main ingredient (tofu-based; grain-based; bean-based, etc.), there is also a gluten-free section and one dedicated to homemade sauces and buns recipes. The pictures are stunning and inviting, and there are symbols indicating if a recipes is nut-free/sugar-free and so on, so people with food allergies can instantly identify which recipe is best for them.
One of my favourite thing about this book is that the recipes herein are not filled with "unfindable" ingredients (unlike other veggie and vegan books on the market), but you can easily buy them in the supermarket or in a regular health food shop, without necessarily having to buy them on the internet at outrageous prices. Plus, once you get the gist of preparing your own veggie burgers, you can use this book for inspiration and try your own variations, i.e. replacing an ingredient you don't like or are allergic to, therefore expanding your "veggie burger horizon".
If you love healthy and tasty food, you should definitely give this book a go.

So many amazing and really different ideas here! Lots of different ingredients that I wouldn't have thought of for veggie burgers but sound delicious. There are a few ingredients that I think aren't the most common to have on hand but otherwise pretty manageable and the instructions are clear. Photos are gorgeous too, this one's a must-have.

While I would hesitate to label some of these patties as burgers (cherry oatmeal energy burger?), I did find this book to cover a wide range of tastes and features recipes inspired by cultures from around the world. Along with the burger recipes are a chair with loose "meat" sandwiches, various sauces and toppings, fries and other sides and a chapter of breads/buns/biscuits. There aren't just your standard burgers one would likely serve at lunch or dinner, but a chapter of breakfast burgers as well. For those missing their favorite fast food burger, there's a chapter for you too!

Recipes are labeled as being free of soy, nuts, gluten and/or added oil or sugar when appropriate. This would be handy for anyone with an allergy or just trying to avoid a certain ingredient at a glance. A variety of cooking methods are discussed including the use of an air fryer.

For those hoping all the recipes use only whole ingredients, be aware that TVP may be called for in the burger you think sounds tasty. I also saw recipes calling for potato flakes. I cannot recall the last time I bought potato flakes. When beans are featured in a recipe, the recipe lists by can only. The author does include the alternative measurement for starting with dried beans, but this info is only in the beginning section on how to use this book. This would have been handy to note in the recipes to make it a little more user friendly.

All that said, I will definitely be borrowing this one from my local library once it's published and likely adding it to my permanent collection as I found quite a few recipes I'd like to try out.

If you like veggie burgers and want new ideas, then this is the recipe book for you. I not only new ideas for veggie burgers, but I found recipes for vegan sauces, breads and rolls in the book. This is a complete book with not only new ideas, but tips as well to making the perfect no fall apart veggie burgers.

This is a mouth watering book to browse through, especially suited to a burger (vegan, vegetarian and occasional veggie) connoisseur. I loved the pictures and the way it was structured, however I found the ingredients over complicated and not as natural as I expected. I expected them to be made of more basic ingredients, and thought some of things included were a bit unnecessary. It is possible to get an excellent veggie burger with just vegetables and a few herbs and spices, and the same for the bean burgers. I think it is a book suited to lots of people looking for veggie burger perfection and to vary tastes and textures, but I prefer a little more simplicity. Good luck with it.

The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet, revised and updated by Joni Marie Newman is a comprehensive book on everything veggie burger. It includes numerous recipes for veggie burgers, as well as recipes for delicious sauces and sides to pair with the veggie burgers. With so many options there is bound to be a favorite veggie burger in here for even the most meat loving people. I would highly recommend this cookbook for anyone looking to reduce their meat consumption.

There are plenty of yummy veggie burger recipes here and plenty of variety in the types of burgers. I haven’t made any of the recipes yet but the instructions seem clear and easy to follow. One note I would make is that you need to plan ahead as a lot of the recipes seem to include some ingredients that you might not have to hand in your store-cupboard staples it I am sure the more seasoned cooks could easily substitute. The design of the book is great, plenty of tasty images and everything is beautifully presented. All in all this looks like a great book and would make a worthy addition to anyone’s cookbook shelf and would make a wonderful present for any vegetarians in your life.

Wonderful variety of vegetarian burgers that meat-eaters can enjoy too. The ingredients can be found at your local health-food store. Never had a whiskey burger and look forward to trying that one. Not so sure about adding peanut butter to the burgers but willing to give it a try. Certainly a healthy and intriguing way to add variety to your diet. Only wish there was calorie, fiber count, number of carbohydrates, etc.

The cover picture caught my attention and I was eager to review this book. The content of the book did not disappoint. So many great recipes for vegetarian burgers. Some recipes are even vegan, or can be made vegan without much ado. Very, very good.

I've tried two recipes, the Couscous Pantry Burger and the Cilantro Lime Rice, both turned out delicious. What's more important though, the recipe instructions were easy to follow. As a European I also appreciate the conversion into metric units, saved me a lot of time.

I give this book a solid four stars. As a life-long vegetarian I am always so happy to find new tasty veggie burger recipes! This book includes some recipes you likely won't find anywhere else, such as the cherry oatmeal protein-packed energy burger. It's divided into handy sections such as bean-based burgers, grain-based burgers and gluten-free burgers, which make it very user friendly. The Fixins section at the end of the book include recipes for sauces, dips and toppings that complement the burger recipes provided. I deducted one star because many of the recipes are trying to emulate the taste of meat burgers rather than emphasize the taste of the vegan ingredients themselves. However, if you aren't a life-long vegetarian or vegan or a purist you may enjoy those recipes.

I was excited to read Joni Marie Newman's new book dedicated to veggie burgers, as I own her previous book "Fusion Food in the Vegan Kitchen' and loving the recipes that i tested ( the corn sushi, the potato salad coleslaw, the phos, the smoky sweet potatoes to name a few). Her recipes stroke me as innovative, proposing combinations that i wouldn't have thought of myself when exploring by myself new flavors when cooking. I found the same rich imagination in this collection of veggie/vegan burgers, discovering so many combinations for creating a delicious, healthy pattie. i love veggie burgers, and the ones i tried from the cookbook taste so much better than their meatie counterparts. I appreciate the fact that the recipes were accompanied by pairing suggestions

This revision of a classic will have you cheering. You love burgers but are cutting down on meat? You'll love this new edition.

Take the food that's good for you, reform it, cook it, mash it up - and you'll have delicious goodness that you and your family (or friends) can enjoy and appreciate.

The pictures are good; the recipes are easier than ever. I recommend it.

I love burgers. Mostly because they're easy to make and eat, and you can get great variety with different toppings or extras. So, when I saw this book should have more than 100 burgers, I thought those were different extras. But no, these are actually different patties, and there's an incredible variety.
Add the beautiful images and design, as well as clear language, and this is a must have book; vegetarian or not.

I love Joni Marie Newman's The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet from Quarto Press - Four Winds Publishing.
The recipes are fun, well formatted to easily follow and the pictures are beautiful.
Wanting to move to a plant based diet for myself and my family was the reason I requested this book and I am so glad I did.
The book has icons with each recipe to help identify what recipes are safe for those with specific allergies.
I like that the chapters cover Burgers for Breakfast, Beef-y Burgers, Bean Based, Tofu based, Grain Based, veggie based, Buns, Breads, Sauces, Sides and MORE .... Wow! No matter your eating style this book is for you. You'll even find your favorite fast food burgers, from Wendy's, Burger Kings, MacDonald's and MORE. Don't let the whole meatless burger thing keep you from trying this book. There are recipes for every taste.
I had to try the Garlicky Ranch Potato Burger and it was amazing. The Chow Mein Burger is the next recipe to try.

As a vegan this book is right up my street. I was absolutely thrilled to be approved for the ARC from Netgalley and boy did this book not disappoint. The burger recepies are all meat free(as the title of the book suggests’) and the range of ideas for meat free burgers in the book is endless. I can’t wait to order a hard copy when the book is published. Can’t recommend it highly enough., thanks Jon Marie Mewman for allowing me the pleasure to add this book to my vegan book shelf.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Full disclosure I am not vegetarian and not vegan but rarely eat beef burgers and I have been looking for alternatives for those nights that my family is enjoying their own grilled concoctions. Now I have an amazing amount of opportunities to dine.

The book is smartly broken down into 14 chapters:

While I have my own chapters that I cannot wait to dive in to (Bean, Vegetable and those Fast Food Favorites) this book definitely has something for everyone. The photography is captivating which is so important in a cookbook. I personally need to know what my burger is "supposed" to look like! The writer also adds important icons at the top of each recipe so it is easy to see that they are nut free, soy free, no oil added etc. For those with dietary restrictions this makes it easy for them to identify which recipes they can try. Last, at the bottom of each recipe is the "YOU ARE SO VEGAN" highlight. So how can I change this for my vegan guests. Thank you!

So now I know I can make and freeze some of these wonderful recipes I will get cooking.

From breakfast burgers to fixing, buns, and sides, The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet is a comprehensive cookbook featuring one of America's iconic dishes. The idea that a veggie burger can replace a meat-based one is a tall order for those who love a traditional burger, but those with an open mind may embrace all this cookbook has to offer. The cookbook itself is separated into logical sections, with burgers divided into types like bean-based, tofu-based, grain-based, vegetable-based, and so on. There are also sections for fixings, buns and bread, and sides.

The cookbook begins with a helpful hints and tips section, with information regarding cooking and preparing, as well as descriptions of different ingredients that may be unfamiliar to some readers. Many recipes include ingredients friendly to vegans and gluten-free eaters, which will give this cookbook a wider range of appeal. I do wish that each recipe included a picture of the finished dish, as the ones with the photographs make the food seem so delicious and inviting.

The most unique section includes breakfast burgers like the Denver Omelet Burger (p. 19), made with tofu instead of eggs. I most want to try the O'Brien Burger (p. 29), as it is a twist on a classic potato side dish. Readers looking for their veggie burgers to taste like traditional meat versions will love the Traditional Beef-y Burger section. From the All-American Burger (p. 38), flavored with garlic, mushrooms, and onion powder, to the Meatloaf Burger (p. 45), there are many recipes that would be delicious and satisfying. The Bean-Based Burgers are better versions of the familiar frozen patties from the grocery store. My favorite is the Basic Black Bean BBQ Burger (p. 57), as it is lightly spiced, but full of flavor. The Tofu-Based Burgers are more adventurous, ranging from Crab Cakes (p. 70), made with tofu and seaweed, to a Strawberry Fields Burger, with an interesting salsa of strawberries, jalapenos, and onions. Grain-Based Burgers use a plethora of grains, like white rice in the Beef and Broccoli Burger (p. 80), macaroni in the Savory Noodle Kugel Burger (p. 83), and couscous in the Couscous Pantry Burger (p. 91). The burgers are rounded out with offerings categorized by Gluten-Free, Vegetable-Based, and Seitan-Based, with flavors that draw from around the world. Fast Food Favorites are vegetable versions of iconic dishes like The Better Mac (p. 158) and Now That's a Whopper! (p. 167).

I am really interested in the Fixin's, with plenty of options to try. There are recipes with recognizable ingredients and ones with interesting flavor profiles that are unfamiliar. Buns and Breads, as well as Sides, round out the cookbook, giving readers options for a complete meal.

Overall, there is a lot to like in The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet. Whether the reader is vegan, vegetarian, or just trying to include more healthy ingredients in their diet, this cookbook will suit the needs of a wide audience. I would definitely recommend this cookbook and I look forward to exploring the plant-based world with The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet.

This is an updated book from the author of the justthefood.com blog. The beginning of the book has a “how to use the book” section. This section explains the icons used in the book for things like soy free and gluten free. It also provides a list of key ingredients and tips for cooking the burgers in a multitude of methods. There was also a fun chapter with fast food copycat recipes, but made vegan. And a Fixins chapter with sauces, dips, etc.

This book has a lot of fun recipes, but I wish it had a few more pictures for the recipes. I was impressed with the variety of recipes, considering they were all burger recipes. Some of my favorite recipes are:

- BLT and Avocado Burger

I enjoyed this book and how the author managed to turn almost any meal into a burger. This book allows you to eat almost any type of meal as a burger which was fun. A great addition to any kitchen and a great way to make a barbeque more fun and unique.

I’m not a veggie, but I often eat meat free meals and I’m always looking for something different and inspirational. Best Veggie Burgers is a revelation. I love meat burgers and I’ve never made or tried other types. All that’s changed and with very little effort and ingredients which by and large are readily available, there’s an absolute host of burger options..

I like the colour, the layout and the fact that there are extra tips for most of the recipes. Useful if you’re new to cooking or don’t have exactly the right mix of ingredients. Easy to navigate and I like this book. My thanks to 5h3 publisher for a copy via Netgalley. .

More than 100 plant-based recipes for vegan burgers, fries and more

Vegetarianism and Veganism is not new to me. Living overseas where commercial convenience foods found in the USA are not easily found it does make the lifestyle somewhat more challenging. Only in the last few years have I found vital wheat gluten, TVP is relatively new, tofu options are limited and though the “health food” options are on the rise they are still limited by Western standards. That said, the produce found in Lebanon is phenomenal year round and many fast foods are vegan or easily vegan-ized.

When I saw this book I thought, “Hooray! I will find recipes I can make easily.” and that is not exactly true as some of those items mentioned above that are not easily found are listed in many of the recipes in this book. That said, I did get a LOT of fun ideas for enhancing the veggie burgers I currently make and look forward to using some of those ideas in the near future. I may ask my daughter to pick this book up for me before she comes next time to visit so I can have a hands-on copy near at hand.

What I liked:
* The photographs
* The way the chapters are set up and what is included in them
* The variety of flavor options
* The allergy indicator icons for every recipe
* The introduction to each recipe
* The “so vegan” comment at the bottom of each recipe
* The notes and recipes for homemade or store bought items like mayonnaise
* The addition of bread recipes
* The ideas I came away with

What I wished for:
* A basic recipe to play with that does not require items I can’t find locally (liquid smoke, nutritional yeast, tempeh, etc)

Overall I believe this is a book I would like to have in my cookbook library and I know that if I ever return to the USA to live I would pick up a copy to use in my home.

Great selection of old favourites and new recipes. Something to suit the life-long vegetarians or even those who just want something different! Very user-friendly and even has some recipes for sides, sauces and toppings!

I know there are many recipes for vegan burgers out there on the internet - and I’ve tried out my fair share of them - but in my opinion, cookbooks are nicer to look at and more practical in general. *shrugs*

So when I saw this book, I got excited. A book solely focused on plant based burgers? Yes, I’m in!

And I wasn’t disappointed in the least. The recipes looked tasty and there were a lot of practical tips. There were also so many burger variations! Yum!

Overall, I’m really happy with this book and can’t wait to try out some of the recipes.

I won’t lie, I wasn’t expecting to take much from this cook book. I’m sort of a hipster when it comes to my food; I’m anti anything that’s ‘in’. However, if I could have someone cook the things in this book I would proudly become Vegan:
As it stands, I don’t really have the kitchen to cook these burgers for myself. Also, cooking for a father who is a picky eater means this is not the everyday book for me.
However, it’s something I think will be perfect for a few friends of mine come Christmas time.

This cookbook was so much fun as it contains a great variety of burgers and sections that made the book easy to read. I'm really tempted to purchase my own copy of this book so I can try several of the recipes at my own pace. Eating vegetarian food doesn't mean boring.

The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet is a new specialty cookbook and guide by Joni Marie Newman. Originally published in 2011, this reformatted update from Quarto on their Fair Winds Press imprint released 23rd July 2019 is 240 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.

I'm usually a little wary of veg*n cookery which copies non-plant-based cuisine. To be honest though, summer, barbecue/grilling weather and entertaining season often brings family and friends together who 'don't like' vegetarian foods because it's 'bland and tasteless'. It's always nice to have some tried and true recipes which are anything but bland, and these true comfort food style burgers and fries with all the trimmings, fit the bill perfectly.

The book is lavishly and clearly photographed throughout (kudos to the graphics team!). It follows a sensible layout; an introduction with how-to's and basic general instructions is followed by chapters full of burger variations made with different base ingredients (meat-like protein, bean, tofu, grain, vegetable based, seitan, etc). There are some breakfast sandwich recipes, as well as buns, sides and fixings for the burgers.

The ingredients are (mostly) easily sourced and can be found in any large grocery. The book also includes an alphabetical index for recipe access.

All of the recipes are helpfully provided in US customary measurements as well as converted to metric (SI) units.

I tend not to highlight any particular recipe when reviewing, all the ones we tested were quite good, but the cilantro lime rice side dish was -outstanding- and we've made it several times since our test runs.

This book is a vegan burger (plus sides and sauces) cookbook. The author frequently used soy (texturized vegetable protein, tofu, miso, tempeh, soy milk, soy flour, soy sauce, etc.) or vital wheat gluten. Of the 106 burgers and 7 loose "meat" sandwiches, only about 25% of the recipes didn't use soy or could be easily converted to a non-soy ingredient. I think that the gluten-free recipes were about the same. That's still around 30 types of burger or sandwich recipes, though. Since I don't eat soy and don't add gluten to foods that don't naturally have it, this did limit the number of recipes that I could potentially use.

The author did use store-bought vegan "dairy" in some of the recipes (especially the sauces). Most of the recipes used ingredients that can be found in my grocery store, and the author tended to use the same base ingredients again and again (in slightly different combinations and/or combined with different spices), so you won't generally need to buy an ingredient that is used in only one recipe. The recipes made between 4 and 10 burgers.

There were 9 breakfast burgers, 12 beefy-tasting burgers (which usually used TVP), 10 bean-based burgers, 9 tofu-based burgers, 12 grain-based burgers, 12 veggie-based burgers, 16 gluten-based burgers (which used vital wheat gluten), 13 gluten-free burgers, 13 fast food mimic burgers, 7 loose "meat" sandwiches, 24 toppings, dips, and sauces, 8 buns and breads, and 17 fries, rings, and other sides.

Such a great book for anyone looking to cut out meat or already on a meat free diet.
There are so many alternatives to a beef patty, and this book has almost all of them. So many amazing ways to have a burger, without just using beans.

It's summer time, and that means cookout time. This is a great collection of meat-free burgers and burger-shaped dishes. I'm totally craving a number of them. Would recommend to anyone looking to cut back on how much meat they eat.

I was salivating just looking through this book! Really good resource for someone craving a meat free burger, there is something for everyone; you can’t fail to find something super tasty! My only critique would be the use of soy in many of the burgers, but that is a personal thing.

This is the "Definitive" vegetarian vegan burger cookbook! A compilation of 100 fabulous recipes from every conceivable healthy ingredient possible. I am a life long vegetarian and I found a multitude of recipes here to try. The book encompasses sides as well that are delicious recipes to try. The recipes are easy to make and the ingredients sensible, healthy and scrumptious.
I love this cookbook and it has become a staple in my kitchen. I highly recommend this for all vegan vegetarian cooks and those seeking a healthier way to eat that will improve your health. This is absolutely the best array of vegetarian burger and side recipes I have found.

The tone of the book is a bit jarring and overly excitable for my tastes but the recipes seem reasonable enough. I love that there are a wide variety of recipes available in this one book.

This book is written in American so be prepared to convert to metric / get your cups and measuring spoons out and have Google handy to translate ingredients if you live in the rest of the world.

I had some difficulty reading this book on my Kindle however it worked fine on my phone so it might be worth trying it on multiple devices.

Not just a burger recipe book! It also has some wonderful sauces and sides included too!
I am not a vegetarian, but we as a family have been looking for ideas of ways of reducing our meat intake on a weekly basis due to the effects on the environment, so this looks great!
I particularly like the sound of the "Tabbouleh Burger" as we are big fans of Lebanese cuisine.
I think this recipe book is well thought out and there is so much to choose from, I can't wait to try some of the recipes.

I've read similar books before (although they were mostly about other meat alternatives) and this one is pretty run of the mill.

As a background, I am not vegan. I have a paleo mindset but am very veggie centric due to health conditions. Therefore, my biases may not align with those of the target audience who may like this book a bit more than I do.

When I choose this book, I was hoping for a bunch of healthy and easy to eat recipes. While by vegan and SAD standards these recipes are healthy, there were way too much soy, grain, tvp and maple syrup for my taste. The book did seem well done otherwise, but with no recipes I'd consider cooking I didn't dive in too deep.

I am not a real vegan. I have a ton of food intolerances, and I take my inspiration where I can to make awesome recipes that are tasty and nourishing. This is maybe why I wasn't thrilled by that book. I wanted to, but there were too many ingredients that I couldn't eat. However, I loved how the book is separated by burger type (bean-based, tofu-based, grain-based...) and loved, loved, loved the Fast Food Favorites chapter! I can't wait to also try some of the sauces, dips, and fries recipes.

The author admits that this updated version of her book enters a world of vastly improved veggie burgers available in both restaurants and supermarkets. For those people who like to cook and still want to create their own burgers, this book has 101 burgers using a wide variety of ingredients (in some cases, a lot of ingredients). The recipes are all vegan, so some use nondairy vegan substitutes for dairy products. The recipes indicate whether they are free of soy, gluten, nuts or added sugar or oil. The uncooked burgers can be frozen and can be cooked without defrosting.

There’s a chapter on breakfast burgers including things like Bacon and Egg Breakfast Burgers, Quiche Lorraine Burgers (which didn’t seem at all like quiche) and Cherry Oatmeal Protein Packed Energy Burgers (which look like a big, dry cookie and have 19 ingredients). None of the recipes need to be restricted to breakfast. In fact, all of them are too much work for me to undertake in the morning.

There are also chapters on: beef-like burgers, made from things like TVP, vital wheat gluten flour and homemade seitan; bean-based burgers (Three Bean Chili Burgers looked good); tofu-based burgers (including Crab Cakes); grain-based burgers; vegetable-based burgers; seitan-based burgers; gluten-free burgers; fast food favorites (like burgers intended to be reminiscent of Big Macs and Whoppers); loose meat sandwiches; fixin’s like sauces and imitation bacon bits (in the ebook these are linked to the relevant recipes); and buns and breads; fries and sides.

Near the end of every recipe, the author inserts “You Are SO Vegan!” I found this annoying, but then I was reading the entire book, not just consulting a single recipe, so most people probably won’t even notice it. The photos in the book are beautiful and the burgers look appealing, but not every recipe is illustrated. Some of them needed pictures, like the Beef and Broccoli Burger and the Inside-Out Sushi Burger, because I am not imaginative enough to figure out how these are supposed to look. I am a vegetarian, but not a vegan, and this book has a lot of variety and some delicious sounding recipes. Most of them are not quick and they are not health food, but they look good.

This book will work great for some vegans, but very little of it was useful for our family's needs. While I'm not vegan, I cook vegetarian and cook a ton of veggie burgers (generally about once a week), always from scratch. I was thrilled to check out a cookbook full of new ideas.

Sadly, since our family is gluten free and I avoid processed soy, very little of the cookbook works for our particular family. The vast majority of the burgers are made either with vast amounts of vital wheat gluten flour or some sort of soy (TVP, tofu, etc.). While I occasionally cook with organic tofu, I actually prefer to make veggie and bean-based burgers. I'm not sure why, but this cookbook has very few of this kind of recipe. Even the bean burger section tends to call for things like TVP and white flour. Also, health doesn't seem to be a big priority here and that's one of the biggest priorities for me as a mom of five (one of whom is a cancer survivor) who successfully beat some serious illnesses through healthy living. I don't want to feed my kids burgers made of imitation bacon bits or texturized vegetable protein (TVP).

If it's helpful, here's my basic veggie burger mix and match formula, which you can adapt for whatever's in your cupboard: chop and saute a couple of cups of whatever veggies you like (onions, mushrooms, peppers, sweet potatoes, cauliflower etc.) until cooked through, then pulse in a food processor with one can of drained beans of choice (garbanzo beans or black beans are nice) till just chunky and chopped. Scoop into a big bowl and add lots of salt and seasonings (garlic, pepper, cumin, parsley, sage, whatever). Add an egg or some flax meal to help it stick together and then about 2 cups of the equivalent of bread crumbs (mix and match any of these... almond meal, bread crumbs, GF bagel or bread crumbs, cooked brown rice, organic mashed potato flakes, cracker crumbs, quick oats, even some parmesan if you're not vegan). Add more liquid or crumbs till it comes together nicely in a patty. Adjust seasonings and fry in olive oil until browned on both sides or bake on a cookie sheet, turning once, until cooked throughout (about a half hour on 350? depending on what else you're baking and how firm you want them). I use an ice cream scoop to quickly make lots, and then just flatten them with a spatula. A cookie scoop makes perfect nuggets or meatballs. Adjust flavors for endless possibilities (use stuffing mix and garbanzo beans for a Thanksgiving veggie burger, black beans and Mexican spices, add ketchup and vegan worchestershire for a meatloaf version, etc.) and provide a variety of sauces for dipping or serving. These are also wonderful with mashed potatoes and gravy. This makes a lot (I cook for a crowd) but they freeze fine. Reheat frozen ones in the oven, microwave or skillet.

Just about every recipe it absolutely wonderful and delicious! I say just about every one since I haven't tried them all yet. Oh my goodness, these are worth your time to make these and enjoy. The directions are easy and simple to use. As some one whose favorite meal is a burger, this book gave me some wonderful ideas for new ways to have my burgers! Plus on the days where I want a burger just not meat this gives me the option for the lighter fare! The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet will be forever on my bookshelf!

I really liked this cookbook. Since I am Vegan, I am looking for a little variety beyond the usual chickpea burger options.

She certainly gives that variety. The carrot burger was really yummy. I'm not a big fan of the fake meat burgers. They are OK, but I'm mostly interested in the bean and veggie burgers.

My main criticism of most of the veggie burger cookbooks is that even though different ingredients are used; it is essentially the same burger. Mash beans, add flour and veggies, and fry.

The burgers in this book are more of a variety. There is a section that has a wide variety of non bean vegetable burgers. None of them seem to be repeats of each other.

I am gradually working my way through this book. I have liked every burger that I tried.

I am probably going to buy this book. It is a keeper.
