The Chameleon

I really really love it when you read a book, a thriller no less, and you can actually feel like the author has clearly taken their time into making sure the book has the perfect twists and perfect plots. This is exactly what this book was and I devoured it. It was that good. It was clearly well thought out and the author wanted readers to leave with the best experience possible and I’m here to say that I did , absolutely! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've read 60ish books so far this year and The Chameleon, by Ron McManus, might be the best one. I lost a night of sleep and boy, was it worth it.

The Chameleon is the 4th book featuring Jake Palmer, a former Navy Seal who is an investigative consultant and has been conrtacted into a top secret JSOC team in Islamabad, Pakistan. Stationed at the U.S. Embassy, it quickly becomes apparent a mole is selling out informants when they begin disappearing. Jake and his partner are tasked with ferreting out the mole and it couldn't happen at a worse time. India and Pakistan are the brink of war and a very real chance nuclear weapons will be used.

Intelligence officials are hearing chatter Islamic extremists plan to steal a nuclear weapon when Pakistan moves them from their storage bunkers to their military bases. They are also hearing rumors of someone called the Chameleon but there are doubts he exists. Some think the Chameleon is not a person but several people. Others believe it's a legend that is fantastical. Regardless, Jake and his partner must find the missing nuclear weapons before they are used.

It was quite evident early on McManus knew what he was talking about. The amount of research he had to do for this book is mind boggling. His writing style is elegant but assessable. By assessable I mean he does something I'm not sure I've ever seen in a thriller: if he uses a word many people might not know he defines it for the reader as an aside in the same sentence. It's a nice touch and allows the reader to progress through the story without interrupting the flow of his story.

Im not sure I can adequately express how good The Chameleon is. McManus should be a bigger name than he is and I'm going to tell everyone how great this book is! However, after I finished The Chameleon I went to buy the rest of the series but Amazon only has the first book. I hope that changes soon.

Wow! This book was wicked. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
I've never read this author before but I'm so glad I picked this up. The only down side was that it ended.

Wow! Action though out with a story The story and the individual adventures grab and keeps holding on. It make me hope that we really have people like this that can protect us from our enemies, our friends, and ourselves.

This is the 4th book in the Jake Palmer series. I have not read the first three books and The Chameleon was a great read as a stand alone book. It was not necessary to have read the previous books to have an understanding of the characters in this book.

Jake Palmer is a private contractor, who along with Alona Green are teamed in this book. There is tension between Pakistan and India and Pakistan send some nuclear war heads to the "front". However three go missing - as in stolen. The Chameleon is suspected of orchestrating the theft. However, is The Chameleon a real person? Is The Chameleon a group of people? Does The Chameleon even exist? Palmer and Green are hot on the trail and in their investigations find a mole who is giving information to Pakistan that has resulted in many deaths.

Fiona Collins, who now works for MI6, is doing her own investigation and urgently calls on her boyfriend Jake Palmer to go to London to help investigate what she is discovering.

Even though I have not read any of the previous books in the Jake Palmer series, if this one is anything to go by I am missing some great reading. I will try to find the previous novels.

I enjoyed the great writing style and fast paced action in this book and have great pleasure in giving it a 5 star rating.

Perfect for readers who enjoy nail-biting military drama. Set in the middle of the unrest between India and Pakistan, Jake Palmer and his partner race to prevent a nuclear attack. Well researched. Lots of information about the unrest in the Middle East. Is there a chameleon or not? Readers will enjoy this intense read.

A well researched and exciting book about the hunt for missing nuclear warheads. The storyline and the author’s writing style are gripping reading.
It is not necessary to have read the other books in the series, this is a stand-alone novel and can be enjoyed as a new story. However,I certainly intend reading the other books in the series.
I know the London settings of the story very well, especially St Katherine’s Dock - the author has clearly done his homework! The technical details of nuclear bombs are also well researched.
In summary, I can really recommend this novel.

Great book, by an author I will read more of! Thrilling plot, great writing and brilliant characters. Highly recommend to others.

Breathtaking. Horrifying. Exciting. World-in-flames awful.

An I-can't-put-it-down page-turning novel about nuclear terrorism. Jake Palmer and his partner are back as the specialists who can rescue the world from disaster and calamity. I hope McManus' imagination is overactive, the story is far-fetched and there's no one like Palmer needed.

But I kept reading, kept exhaling, and kept moving back from the edge of my seat when I was ready to fall off. Take it along when you need some excitement, especially if you enjoy a thriller.
