This is a lovely, child friendly guide on plants we regularly see. The book is divided into types of plants such as grass, pond and berries and has beautiful pictures and explanations. There are diagrams that are labelled and easy to read and little 'closer look' signs to focus on some plants in more detail. There.are stickers at the back and activity ideas to engage children with nature. A wonderful read.

An accessible and informative guide to backyard and everyday plants and flowers, this book was lovely! Not only did it help with identification, it also broke down plants by categories AND included interactive scavenger hunts, Do-it-yourself crafts and activities and art guides. Such a fun gift for any nature-loving kid, or that parent trying to encourage more outside time.

I can’t wait to buy this for my twins! They have all of these Backyard Explorer books and have been asking if there are any new ones. They get my kids reading and writing while exploring. I think this is my favorite one so far!

This beautiful, colorful, interactive book is designed to get kids outside playing with Mother Nature. This title will appeal to 1st-4th grade students most. There is a combination of facts, activities, and personal reflection via questions posed by the book that will interest young people.

What a brilliant book. I'll be buying the hardback copy when it comes out to take with me on my nature walks with my little girl. It is comprehensive in its topics and engaging for children. It is also useful for parents who may have forgotten some plant basics.

This is an exceptional book. I plan to purchase a copy and use it for my son’s education once he is able to learn to read. The activities are perfect for 6-9 age ranges, and I do plan to adapt some of them for preschoolers.

My only gripe is that the US edition should note when plants (ex wineberry) are invasive. It does not include this, and I saw a few invasive species on there.

The drawings are excellent, and I feel it is a large variety of materials.

Backpack Explorer: Discovering Plants and Flowers is an adorable book for children. It helps walk children through exploring plants and flowers in their own back yard. In each section they include examples of the part of the plant they are talking about. The language is easy to understand and the structure of the book is easy to follow. The parts of the flower go from big to small (the last is the seed). I als0 just love the photographs; they are beautiful. Children also have stickers to place in their book for when they see a specific plant! I am an adult and not only I would love to share this with my kids, but I love it for myself.

Unexpected fun from this book. We are so impressed with this book and everything that we have learned from it.The real life illustrations are what really grabbed our attention and why we keep going back to look at the book again and again. My 4 year old is in love with the book and keeps wanting to discover more. You will learn all kinds and types of flowers and plants. So many we didn't even know about. The book is so interactive you will find something new every time you read it. We learned to be creative with plants, act like a bee, make a beautiful flower bouquet and even go on a scavenger hunt. We really enjoyed this book. We received it as an ARC but we will be adding it to our collection, it's so wonderful. I highly recommend this to share with your little ones and for the classroom

Learning about nature in the backyard garden or while hiking with family and friends, using “Backpack Explorer: Discovering Plants and Flowers,” youngsters will learn to identify both blooming and non-flowering plants; recognize leaves of different species of plants, flowers and trees; make bouquets and weavings with flora; understand pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds; and much, much more.

While using this colorful interactive activity book full of cheerful illustrations and lovely photography, children will learn by seeing and doing suggested projects. The explanations about topics are well-explained for a child’s reading comprehension, with photos or art illustrations alongside to assist with understanding.

A really cool art activity that’s suggested and demonstrated is making pictures using “paint” from the juices, saps and resins of berries, flowers and other plants. Learning to make flower crowns is another project perfect for every little princess and prince while adventuring. I’m also excited to learn these techniques as well!

In addition, there’s a set of charming stickers in the back of the printed edition that readers can match to complementary images throughout the book.

JoyReaderGirl1 graciously thanks NetGalley and Storey Publishing, LLC, an imprint of Workman Publishing Co., a subsidiary of Hachette Book Group, Inc. for this advanced reader’s copy (ARC) for review.

Forest Schoolers at the ready, the new Backpack Explorer book is a wonderful companion to going out exploring in your garden, local parks and woodland. When this book releases in Spring 2024, the blossom will be in bloom and you and your mini botanists can head out, backpack on, book in hand, for some plant-based fun.

We read it with children aged 4 and 6 and they were fascinated by the facts. The layout is great, simple enough not to overwhelm but with plenty of information. The best part about this book is the lovely activities it encourages, all planned out, so that you can head out on an 'expedition' to find items from scavenger hunts, behave like bees and pollinate the wild flowers around you, paint with petals and berries and generally 'get your mess on' in an immersive play kind of way.

This book is perfect for anyone who wants to encourage their curious EYFS/KS1 children outdoors into nature to learn first-hand about the flora. The only downside of this charming companion to experimental learning would be that our children have tried to use the book as proof that jam is one of their 5 a day!!

Thank you NetGalley and Storey Publishing for sending this eBook for review consideration. All opinions are our own.

My daughters and I love this series and this book is no different. We always take one along when we go for a hike or to the science museum and now we take this along to the botanical garden. They had so much fun finding different flowers, learning names and trying to sound out species types. We made a few of the crafts (highly recommend the weaving if at a park) and structured a unit study around flower life cycles.

I will never get enough of this book! The kids will just love it. It’s fun, full of activities that are both educational and enjoyable.

The book is quite engaging as it describes flowers and plants in a very specific yet colourful way with titbits of useful information on different plants and their environment.

The highlight is the activities and the stickers that would actually come with the book! This guidebook is full of prompts that would encourage the child to be more environmentally conscious and more aware about some of the most common plants and flowers we see.

Thank you, Storey Publishing, for the advance reading copy.

One of my favorite things about childrens books is how they help explain the world around us. This book is an absolute gem! From its scavenger hunts to its explanations of why plants are so essential in our world and its experiments, Backpack Explorers: Discovering Plants and Flowers will be loved and used over and over again as a wonderful reference point and fun guide of things to do for nature loving families. If you already love this series, this one may become your favorite.

Fantastic activity learning book for any age or country of origin, really. The early divisions are flowers, grasses, leaves, cactus, wildflowers, marsh/water plants, mosses/ferns, berries, as well as which plants are dangerous. There are activities for learning and stickers (if the book is gifted to one person). It also encourages interaction for the reader with both the giver and the environment. I want one!
The illustrations are delightful, imaginative, clear, and colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, and even to a school or teacher or your public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Storey Publishing, Storey Publishing, LLC via NetGalley. Thank you!
A marvelous book!

Absolutely loved everything about the fun children’s books. Lots of fun activities that teach us about the world and the things around us.

Fun! Even better, shh, don't tell the kids, it's educational. Kids of all ages, including us old kids, can learn quite a bit from this deceptively simple book. The illustrations (see cover) are realistic, mostly photos, and colorful, and draw you into the text. While the cover lured me in, I was definitely impressed with not only the illustrations and organization, but the numerous variety of hands-on activities suggested throughout. Each section ended with ideas for getting involved, getting your hands dirty, so to speak. I've read that there are even stickers provided in the actual book for children to use to mark their discoveries as they investigate the world of plants and flowers, not to mention berries and grasses. As an adult who still loves stickers, I can see where they would be a great motivator.

The info is presented in an easy to read manner but don't let that fool you. It's full of great info and ideas, as well as photos showing the various items mentioned. I would anticipate many children gravitating to the activity showing them how to use the juices of various plants and berries to create masterpieces of their own designs. In addition, if you have a budding prince or princess, there are instructions on how to create flower/plant crowns, not to mention many, many more activities to get them involved. As almost any teacher will tell you, getting children to feel a part of the actual learning (without knowing it) is half the battle.

This lovely, colorful, easy-to-read book would make a lovely gift for both children and not-so-young adults, too. I'll also mention that the book takes the space to caution young explorers about plants to be avoided, not to mention warns them simply not to go around picking flowers without permission. That brought back memories of plucking some of my grandma's beloved roses as a child. She was gracious but, of course, in retrospect, may have been holding back tears. In any case, thanks #NetGalley and #StoreyPublishing for allowing me this sneak peek. If there wasn't three feet of snow outside my windows here in Alaska, I'd be outside checking out some of nature's beautiful works of wonder.

What a great book for every young nature explorer to take along on their adventures! Interactive and informative, along with beautiful illustrations and a great starting point for a young learner to get hands on in nature. I recommend all of the field guides in this series and this one isn't any different, it is well done and would be a great gift. It has just the right mix of information and activities.
