Description
50 heartfelt photographs and interviews, reflecting on the universal experience of loneliness.
It’s easy to feel that we are alone in feeling alone. Not only do we suffer, but we also destroy our self-confidence with repeated convictions that we are the only ones who are so confused and at sea, the only ones without a partner and who will be alone (again) on Saturday night.
Through fifty touching interviews and captivating portraits by the talented photographer Julia Hawkins, this transformative book uncovers the ways that loneliness touches so many of us. We hear from a diverse array of individuals whose lives have been shaped by isolation – those who feel invisible, misunderstood and alienated, as well as those who have found unexpected paths to understanding and connection.
We come to understand that we are not unique in our solitude, and that being alone is a natural part of the human experience - and so we have every reason to hold out a hand to our similarly complicated, kind and lonely neighbours.

I think everyone feels a little bit lonely at some point in life I know I have. Very pleased to see a book addressing this issue I know it will help a lot of people.

I visited The School of Life shop in London a number of years ago after reading various books and essays. I was impressed by the products related to personal growth and therapy. It’s for this reason that I was very keen to read this book.
It most definitely made me think more about loneliness in today's society, as well as the numerous reasons behind people's feelings of isolation. Reasons such as illness, bereavement, refugee status, ethnicity, working patterns, and neurodiversity were mentioned, among many others. I appreciated the layout of the book and the photos of the contributors.
This book made me feel emotional and really highlighted the importance of everyday kindness and empathy. As connection can feel so inaccessible, it's important to remember how many small acts can make a huge difference to a person's everyday life. I received a free advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and this is my honest review.
