I want to say thank you from the bottom of my oldest son's heart and my own to the author, the publisher, and netgalley for allowing us the privilege of being able to arc read this book. We really appreciate it!
My oldest son has been on a huge Greek mythology kick for almost 6 months now, and I couldn't resist the title of this story, or the description when I requested it from Netgalley I knew he would love to read this. I was right he did! When he saw Iris's name he got so excited and was even more excited when he found out he was right about who she was. He devoured this book in less than 30 minutes and he said he loved the story, the pictures and how well the author did Greek mythology. My son is a little bit outside of probably the intended audience, and can read miles about his grade range, he's almost 11 and I feel this would be directed for ages 6-8, maybe a smidge higher, but he still absolutely loved this book!
When I read through it I have to agree. The images are absolutely beautiful and are placed appropriately throughout the text, so children have an idea about what might be going on. Not to say that the author doesn't do a fantastic job at writing an age appropriate description, she does! It's just that some kids have a hard time with picturing things period and the author captures those moments exactly. The story is so well done! It is perfectly age appropriate text, not too much, or too little. And it's messages about helping others when you can, the benefits of being truthful, and about opening up to others about how you feel far surpassed my expectations. It wasn't pushed in your face, it was used perfectly at the most appropriate times all throughout the book and I loved that. I especially loved the historical references, research and accuracy the author put into this story without it being too overwhelming or inappropriate. This was such a flawless little book, and I really can't wait to see where the author goes with the rest of their series!
Thank you so much from the bottoms of our hearts. We both absolutely loved this book, and we truly appreciated being able to read this book.
Thank you so much to Muse and Quill Press and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
I loved this so much, what an incredibly fun adventure set during the Greek times, following Iris who waters the clouds as she is summoned by Zeus on an important mission to fetch water from river Styx down in the underworld.
I enjoyed going on this adventure so much, the illustrations were so beautiful to look at, seeing events from the story. It was full of all the Greek mythology but written in such a perfect way for younger readers.
I loved exploring the world through the eyes of Iris as she has to take on the scariest journey of her life, fetching some water from the underworld to get Zeus daughters to tell the truth of what happened on the picnic. I really enjoyed seeing all different aspects of the world and meeting many iconic characters that we know of from Greek mythology.
It was great seeing our protagonist become so important, finding that her job of watering the clouds could give her so much more of an adventurous job and life. Also that Hermes found his calling on that adventure too. The gifts they were given for a job well done were magical, It was such a beautiful and fun read.
I also loved the additional information at the end, sharing more context for who these people were. It’s such a perfect read for teaching children about Greek mythology as you get to go on a fun adventure, with a bit of danger involved, but then learn so much along the journey too.
