Description

Nulling Out IS high-achiever emptiness. You may not see it until that "Is This It?" moment—when you face the full summation of what you've built and the question lands. Not because life is failing, but because it no longer reaches you.

Nothing looks off. You're still producing, still leading, still carrying real responsibility. But emotional range narrows, preference signals weaken, and achievement starts to feel like box-checking—followed mainly by relief that you didn't fail.

Nulling Out: The Terrifying Cost of Success…and the Path Back to Being Fully Alive is the foundational book of The Nulling Out Recovery System, a complete implementation framework for moving from recognition to reconnection. Physician and psychiatrist Cheryl Jack, MD names what often goes unnamed: the systematic self-erasure that can happen when you become exceptionally skilled at performing success while repeatedly overriding your own internal signals—one “strategic” decision at a time, one authentic response traded for a professional one, one genuine preference postponed until it disappears.

You’ll discover:

  • why major victories can feel like checkmarks instead of celebrations
  • how competence can become camouflage for disconnection
  • the difference between performing your life and actually living it
  • why conventional success advice fails people who already know how to achieve
  • a reconnection path that doesn’t require abandoning what you’ve built

Direct, structured, and practical, Nulling Out is for the high performer whose outer life is intact—and whose inner life has become difficult to locate. For the executive who can build an empire but freezes in front of a menu. For the leader who can chart the course for an organization but can’t find himself inside his own days. For the person who’s mastered everything except the ability to want something and feel it matter.

Your competence isn’t the problem. The disconnection is. And it can be reversed.

Nulling Out IS high-achiever emptiness. You may not see it until that "Is This It?" moment—when you face the full summation of what you've built and the question lands. Not because life is failing...

As someone who has experienced clinical burnout and also is currently stuck in a rut, reading this book was like a puzzle piece clicking into place. I had no clue what "nulling out" was, but it's a concept that needs to be out there. I'm so grateful to have these words now.
