Description
A page-turning, unforgettable fantasy set in a city peopled with ruffians, spies, malcontents and murderers. Experience out-of-this world adventure and dangerous politics as Maggie tries to survive waking up in her favourite fictional world.
A heart-pounding epic from No. 1 New York Times bestselling author duo Ilona Andrews.
When Maggie wakes up cold, filthy and naked in a gutter, it doesn’t take her long to recognize Kair Toren. It’s a city she knows intimately from the pages of a famously unfinished dark fantasy series – one she’s been obsessively reading and re-reading, while waiting years for the final novel.
Her only tools for navigating this gritty world of rival warlords, magic and mayhem? Her encyclopaedic knowledge of the plot, the setting and the characters’ ambitions and fates. But while she quickly discovers she cannot be killed (though many will try!), the same cannot be said for the living, breathing characters she’s coming to love.
Maggie joins a motley band that includes a former lady’s maid, a deadly assassin, various outrageous magical creatures and a dangerously appealing soldier. Soon, instead of trying to return home, she finds herself enmeshed in the schemes – and attentions – of duelling princes, dukes and villains. This all while trying to save them and the kingdom of Rellas from the ending she’s seen on the page: a cataclysmic war.
This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me is the beginning of the most epic adventure yet from genre powerhouse writing duo Ilona Andrews. For fans of Samantha Shannon, Sarah J. Maas, Danielle L. Jensen and isekai portal fantasy.

Maggie knows things
This book devoured me and spat me out at the end. I’ve never been more happy to be swallowed up by a book and live in the crumbs. Maggie was a compelling protagonist from the beginning, finding herself transported and destitute in a fantasy world of acute danger.
There was no black or white in this piece. Every character was a spectrum of morally grey, including Maggie. You never knew what was around the corner, sometimes murder, sometimes torture and always danger. The creatures were interesting throughout and well described so that the movie playing in my mind was vivid, detailed and strange.
Maggie showed herself to be cunning and shrewd. She had to look out for herself but eventually over time, she showed her compassion for others, surrounding herself with a strange and loveable found family. I adored Clover, Will and Lute especially from that crew.
There was another I came to love but I have to be cagey in the details. The MMC was mysterious but there did seem to be some authenticity to the connection between him and Maggie. This friendship was built on uncertainty, smoke and mirrors and I was here for every twist and turn.
The villians of the story were heinous. The butcher and most of the ‘S’ characters were really awful and scary individuals. The magical powers in this land were varied and brought the peril up a number of notches.
Of course, this book ended in a way that I am desperate to the power of infinity for the next book. I absolutely cannot wait and will probably need a re-read before I get my hands on the sequel. This offering was less romance-y than Ilona Andrews norm but it is one of my favourites they’ve written.

Experience out-of-this world adventure and dangerous politics as Maggie tries to survive waking up in her favourite fictional world. The very epitome of page-turner with a chilling storyline that grips from the first and kept me guessing right up to the heart-racing denouement STUNNER
This Kingdom Will not Kill Me, a fantastic read that leaves you wanting more. Maggie, our protagonist, wakes up one day and finds herself in the world of her favourite fantasy novel. She has no idea what brought her there but uses her knowledge of the world and its characters to survive. She also knows the terrible things that will befall the world and has to decide if she wants to change the course of fate. Amazing characters, lovely found family, really unique and interesting plot and the most slow burning romance with tension that leaps off the page. Would highly recommend, thoroughly enjoyed!

Absolutely glorious.
This Kingdom Will not Kill Me feels like Ilona Andrews collected everything that made their previous books wonderful -- the unique, wondrous world-building, the simmering slow-burn tension, and the MC with a strong moral compass, and perfect pacing -- and dialed them all up to 11.
This was a wonderful, delicious read, the kind I did not want to put down and found myself dodging chores and taking 'just one more coffee break' just so I could keep reading. Highly recommended! (especially to readers who loved Sarah Rees Brennan's Long Live Evil)

It's not often a book grabs me in such a way that I do not want to put it down.
The premise is simple - Maggie is a woman of our world, whose favourite series is about a land called Kair Toren.
Except - the trilogy she loves has only had two volumes published, and the author disappeared.
She devours all Fantasy, but has returned to and reread these two books over and over again throughout her life. Like a comfortable shoe she wears the words.
Then, suddenly, she is in that world. She knows it's a trope, but has no clue how it happened. What she does know is a lot about many of the people she meets, and what changes she would like to make in the world - but will not knowing what the next book has in store make it more difficult for her? What of the minor characters who never had a POV chapter - or worse, the major ones, who were only seen in the third person.
Seven families. One ruler. Politics and magic and treachery.
Will her insider knowledge allow her to survive and achieve her goals?
Is all as it seems or....?
5 Stars without hesitation.
This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me was a huge amount of fun and felt so unique in it's scope of the protagonist.
A main character that can't die, loads of people trying to kill her, AND a big bad man who is soft only to her? SIGN ME UP. Incredible storytelling, intriguing political landscape and a really unique take in an inflated fantasy genre.
I will be recommending this to absolutely everyone.
Thank you to Tor and Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVED this book. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
The story centres around Maggie, who has just woken up in her favourite (unfinished) fantasy series with absolutely nothing. All she has is her knowledge of the characters and the future of the city. The future of the city is in trouble though, and she is trapped in it. How will she survive? How will she make allies in this dangerous city? And how is she going to get home? Will Maggies knowledge from the unfinished series be enough to see her through this?
This was my first time reading a book like this where the main character is transported to a new location/world with no warning or reason.
At first, the main character referencing her “real” life bothered me, and I found the switch jarring when we’d be brought back to the “real” world for a little reminiscing. I found that the back-and-forth between worlds reduces drastically as the story goes on though, and I quickly accepted this as a feature of this storytelling-style and pushed through. And wow, am I glad I did!
Aspects I did like is that the main character is not a teenager, Maggie is in her mid-20s. I also found her to be a very likeable character, who actually has some sense! This made her feel relatable to me. I also found some of her thoughts really amusing and generally a realistic reaction to the situation, which made being inside her head really enjoyable.
I quickly became very invested in Maggie and her group. I was laughing at parts, and crying at others. I celebrated with Maggie and felt every bit of frustration that she did. The story does end on a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book to find out what happens!

Maggie's story obsessed me for a week! Since the first chapter, I was hooked. For me, it is a perfect or at least the nearest thing to perfection, a fantasy book could be; the plot is interesting and full of different adventures that are very different from each other ( murder mystery, heist, ballroom classes, rags to riches, it has it all!), a cool worldbuilding and amazing characters.
In fact, Maggie is maybe one of the best fantasy fmc's I've read in a long time. I adore her so much! She's brave, intelligent, cunning and the kindest person who is impossible not to love and care for. All the characters are interesting, diverse, and the found family she finds is super cute. AND THE ROMANCE, it's just perfection. It's super well done.
I'm sure that This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me is one of the most solid, interesting and funnier fantasy novels out this year, and a lot of people will enjoy it so much.
I need the second book right now!
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the arc. It makes me so happy, and I can't wait to buy every beautiful edition of the book.
This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews is exactly that. I’ve always enjoyed isekai manhwa for the wild, silly fun, accepting the plot holes and chaos… but this book takes the concept and levels it up. Everything feels sharper, funnier, and way more engaging.
Solentine is a whole mood. A deadly handsome guild master? My type, 100%. The characters are lively, the stakes feel real, and the pacing kept me flipping pages faster than I expected. I’m loving everything about this one, from the clever worldbuilding to the chemistry that doesn’t hit too fast but lands perfectly.
