Description
The Hunter's Craft is a psychological thriller told entirely in the voice of a serial killer, a confession that reads less like remorse and more like doctrine. Structured as a series of responses to hypothetical questions, the novel takes readers inside the mind of a methodical predator as he traces his own evolution: from emotional detachment in early life, to his first "accidental" kill, to the cold refinement of a process he has come to think of as a craft.
Disturbing and compulsively readable, the book offers a fictional but deeply authentic-feeling portrait of a psychopath, one that resists easy condemnation by forcing the reader to follow his logic, step by step, to its inevitable conclusions. Themes of trauma, control, addiction, and rationalization surface not through analysis but through the killer's own unfiltered self-assessment.
Written in an intimate, unwavering first person, The Hunter's Craft will appeal to readers of Mindhunter, American Psycho, and The Silence of the Lambs, and to anyone drawn to fiction that takes the darker corners of human psychology seriously.
A Note From the Publisher
This is the first book in a series. The upcoming follow-up thriller, Ghost Hauler: Fifty Teeth, expands the universe from a different vantage point, making the two books companion reads that reward readers of both.
Please note: this book contains graphic descriptions of violence, psychological manipulation, and disturbing ideation. It is intended for mature readers of dark psychological fiction.
The Hunter's Craft has received a 5-star review from Readers' Favorite, which noted it "felt so realistic that I had to double-check to confirm it was not based on real events."
Advance Praise
"Although it is a work of fiction, it felt so realistic that I had to double-check to confirm it was not based on real events. The detached tone reflects the cold, methodical thought process of a killer. It resembles a diary of confessions, and at certain moments, I found myself compelled to feel empathy... The plot was skillfully constructed and stayed with me long after I completed the book."

This truly reads like it could have been written by a serial killer, it is thoroughly chilling and the pure lack of empathy makes this work of fiction feel almost real, and as a result terrifying.
I received this free advance copy via Netgalley. Thank you to Stephen Van Olsen and ARC provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op. This review is being left voluntarily and the opinions are my own.
I quite enjoyed reading this account told from the pov of a serial killer. The use of the word 'hunt' I found particularly intetesting as it felt like a way of normalising the act of killing but almost treating it as a sport or just any other hobby.
It was honestly such a chilling account and although a work of fiction, the author has done extensive research into the psychology around why people behave in this way and it is evident in the text.
I think the most chilling thing is that the protagonist could have been any other person in society, someone you knew and who you would have never suspected of such heinous crimes.
Another thing that struck me was in an early scene he is so appalled by somone's living conditions and feels able to justify what he does because he feels he is going society a favour from a moral point of view.
I loved this account and would love to read more like this in the future!
I absolutely loved this novella! As a psychology minor and forensic major, this book was so well written through the eyes of a serial killer. It felt so realistic and it was so good that I read it in one sitting. I will forsure be reading anything this author writes in the future. He clearly spent a lot of time on his research and it paid off.
Thank you to Netgalley, Stephen Van Olsen, and Victory Editing for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest feedback.

First, I would like to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to read your book. I couldn't put it down, and it consumed me entirely.
I love how this book was written, giving not only the point of view but also the mindset of a serial unaliver. It had me on my toes the entire time, and that is 100% what I look for in a thriller! Once again, thank you, Stephen Van Olsen, for giving me a copy; it truly means a lot!

Thank you to NetGalley & Stephen VanOlsen for allowing me access to the ARC of this book for review!
Ever get the feeling you’re being followed? Maybe something made a noise in your house you just couldn’t put your finger on? Suppose you just had this awkward feeling you weren’t alone?
Immerse yourself into the mind of a serial killer with each page of this book. Each chapter opens with a question so willingly answered…tales of lives so easily taken..
It’s a short story, yes, but it’s so well put together, I kept having to check that the author wasn’t writing from his own personal events and was a work of fiction. I was so immersed, I devoured it in one sitting..
After reading this book, you’ll invest in that extra camera for your house, you’ll take bigger safety precautions when you’re out, and you’ll never see anyone around you the same way again.
Good luck & happy reading 🙃
Massive thanks to Stephen Van Olsen and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op for this free advanced copy of the The Hunter's Craft. I am leaving this review voluntarily and all opinions expressed are my own.
This book was such a compelling read because of both the format and the subject matter.
Consisting of the thoughts of a (fictional) serial killer in reponse to hypothetical questions that he himself poses as if from a reader, the writing really gripped me. The short chapters, each an answer to a different question, made it easy to race through.
I found the main character's voice to be extremely haunting, and the author did an amazing job depicting the sense of detachment and emptiness within him.
I've you'd have told me this was a true reflection written by a convicted serial killer, I would believe you, which is testament to the author's research behind the scenes.
Even though it didn't follow a traditional narrative structure, the book still had a very good twist that I didn't see coming.
Highly recommend reading this book, just perhaps not at night when you are home by yourself.
