Wired Differently by Grant Pye
5/5
Being someone who has ADHD, the self-help and physiological books has always drawn me in. I knew I had to read this when the author went into detail about the subcategories of ADHD rather than just grouping all of us into one.

I really enjoyed this book and actually took some notes to reference to later. The author does mention in the beginning that this book is different from any other ones you have read. I couldn't help but role my eyes, every book says that. He actually proved me wrong. He gives real life advice that is easily adaptable to fit into your life. The paragraphs are structured shorter and he gives recaps of the main ideas multiple times so you don’t have to read the chapter if you don't want to. There is also real-world examples to show how the subtypes and their qualities manifest into life. The author really knows his audience and it shows.

The only thing I do not like is the cover. I feel that it does not draw the reader in and show how great the book truly is.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to be an ARC reader. I cannot wait to see what the author puts out next

In “ wired differently”, Grant Pye not only gives an interesting insight in his framework of six archetypes of ADHD, he also provides valid strategies to overcome the obstacles of each ADHD archetype.
He defines the six archetypes, the visionary, the reactor, the connector, the doer, the starter, and the seeker. He the starter, and the seeker. He provides a short assessment to identify once own archetype, a detailed description of the specifications of each archetype, as well as strategies that help leverage one’s own strength and weaknesses in everyday working and private life.
Even though I was critical about Grant, not being an educated psychologist, I found his thoughts in this book very also to understand my own strength and weaknesses. Definitely an interesting book to read for those who struggle with their abilities and everyday life.

“Wired Differently: The Six Types of ADHD You've Never Heard Of”, a book releasing in April by Grant Pye, caught my eye because, hello, I have ADHD. This book is a must-read manual for any ADHDer, as well as anybody who wants to better understand the ADHDer in their life (spoiler: it can even help people who do not have ADHD understand themselves better).

Pye is the creator of The ADHD Archetype System©, which helps people find their dominant operating style. First of all, he comes at ADHD with the following perspective: ADHD is not a problem to be fixed, but a difference to understand. ADHDers are NOT broken. Next, something I like about the book is that even though there are six main archetypes, the author also allows space for those who may be hybrids (people who have more than one dominant operating style) and offers guidance to those who just can’t figure out with which of the six Archetype to align.

The book is very organized and laid out methodically. This helps readers know what to expect throughout the literary experience. But wait! Pye encourages readers to use the book as a manual: to highlight, write in the margins, and, wait for it, read the sections in any order they see fit (and return to their favorite sections regularly). How “neurodivergent-coded” of him. When I read the book, I read all of the introduction parts and the overview of all six archetypes. Then I read the sections for my top three archetypes, as well as the rest of the book.

What I went in thinking was going to be my top archetype (the Visionary), actually turned out to fall behind the Doer and the Seeker. Once I had my top three types I read with interest about the gifts, strengths, challenges, and opportunities for each type. Something that was really interesting to me is that Pye also talks about the optimal physical environment for each type and what they truly need to be successful. He talks about what to do with your shadow-side and how to break unhelpful behaviors and patterns, both in the moment and longer-term. Each section also has scripts you can use to share about your archetype and how you operate with people in your work and personal lives. There are lots of examples of lots of things in each section, which is helpful and really helps make the book feel personal.

Grant Pye knows his audience well, so he gives a few simple tasks to complete before closing the book. He knows something is going to go awry at some point (ask any ADHDer who has purchased- yet another- new planner or organizational tool), and provides gentle guidance on how to get back on track. There are tips for all types when you’re stuck, overwhelmed, emotionally spiraling, and for when your system has completely collapsed. Pye shares his wisdom in an encouraging way, without shaming or blaming.

One of my favorite parts of the book is at the very end: Appendix A: For Families, Friends, Supporters. It’s a guide to ADHD in general, as well as to all of the archetypes in The ADHD Archetype System©. This section comes with DOs and DON’Ts for family members. It helps others understand what ADHD is and what ADHD is not. In addition to being quite educational, it outlines how they can set boundaries with ADHDers and discusses some common relationship challenges for a variety of relationship types.

If you are an ADHDer who struggles to feel motivated, organized, or understood this book is for you. If you want to know more about how to make the most of your ADHD traits, this book is for you. If you want to be able to better interact with people in general (not just those with ADHD), this book is for you! I highly recommend reading “Wired Differently: The Six Types of ADHD You've Never Heard Of” with your pen and highlighter at the ready. Pye encourages his reader to give themselves permission to return to the book often, that is what it’s here for. When you obtain new and meaningful insights that inspire you, you'll process the information differently as you evolve, and this manual will grow with you.

This is a great book for anyone who has, suspects or otherwise identifies with having ADHD. Its a book written by someone who just gets it, and gives amazing coaching type advice and information. There is a detailed assessment so we really can find solutions that work for our unique profile, because, let’s face it, ADHD presents in so many different ways. I was surprised with my results but with hindsight they made perfect sense!

I admit I skimmed a lot of the intro (because y’know, ADHD!) but the author is super validating in acknowledging that we will jump about depending on what grabs our interest and has structured the book in such a way that this is totally ok.

What absolutely captured my attention was the assessment - I started here and worked my way through the book backwards and forwards from here.

Once you have identified your primary and secondary types you can deep dive into each. Each type is presented in a similar pattern. Starting with ‘Understanding your pattern’ and taking it from there. It then offers supportive strategies having illustrated where difficulties show up - this makes the book super practical. It involves reframing to keep brains happy and engaged. Advice on ‘sharing your type’ is also featured.

Section 3 features implementation and advanced strategies and applies to all types with differentiation where needed. This section features health, routines and so much more.

Having read this book I am amazed at how accurate it felt for me -so many ‘aha!’ moments! It is a book to be kept, treasured and referred back to - essential reading!! I really can’t recommend this resource highly enough.

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
