Description

From stocking your kitchen cabinets to stocking a prepper pantry, this is the essential guide to creating a practical food storage system for everyday life and long-term emergencies, from the creator of This Prepared Life.

Allison Michael's unique, three-layered system is all about building food storage for both short- and long-term emergencies. The first layer is your own kitchen pantry—it includes the foods you'll eat in the next week or two. The second layer is your "home grocery store," containing the food you'll eat over the coming year; you'll "shop" from there to refill your pantry. The third layer is long-term storage for a future emergency; these are bulk quantities of foods, packaged carefully to last years or even decades.

Whether you're trying to shop less often, still skittish from living through the pandemic food shortages, or aspiring to fully prepare your family to survive a long-term emergency, Home Food Storage provides the skills you need to implement and maintain a successful food storage system—one that starts with a well-stocked kitchen and is full of nutritious foods that your family enjoys eating.

As part of this essential guide, Michael teaches:
  • How to choose foods that will last in storage
  • How to package food properly to extend its shelf life
  • How to track and rotate your food supply
  • How to calculate your family's food needs, based on what they actually eat
From stocking your kitchen cabinets to stocking a prepper pantry, this is the essential guide to creating a practical food storage system for everyday life and long-term emergencies, from the creator...

Home Food Storage is the perfect manual for anyone who is wanting to start a serious food storage system in their home. Ms. Michael outlines the steps needed to create a three-layer food program: a month's worth in the pantry, a year's worth for short term emergencies like sickness, supply shortages or income loss, and a long term supply with no real end date for catastrophic events. No matter what your mindset, you will find helpful, common sense ideas on how to buy, store and use the food you have in your home. There are even meal plans and recipes included that use long term foodstuffs such as freeze dried meat. This is not a doom and gloom book, but a sensible presentation with information that anyone can use, even if they don't subscribe to the need for a prepper lifestyle.

I received a free advance reader copy. All opinions are my own.

I'm giving this book five stars as there was nothing to detract from it. It was very well done. The author made it clear that this is a book about home food storage to prepare for emergencies and laid out her ideas in a reasonable manner.

Although I personally do not feel a need to be extremely prepared for emergency scenarios and I may likely not use a great deal of the information, I still found this book to be incredibly useful as someone who wishes to keep a good pantry. I appreciate that her book does not focus on the what if scenarios that can feel distressing to those who wish to be prepared for anything. Instead, she simply focuses on a lot of useful things that someone can do to keep their food and ingredients from spoiling in short and long term storage.

I live in a very humid environment and with the price of food going up, I want to put more consideration in storing certain ingredients for long periods of time without letting them spoil. The reference material in this book will be useful for me to go back to often and so I do recommend it.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this title.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning so many new things about preserving and storing all kinds off foods in this book! The information is very useful and I think it masterfully covers the basics from a beginner perspective but the more experienced preserver would still pick up new tips and find it a useful resource/companion. I particularly enjoyed the A to Z of ingredients and how to work with each one.

As a home gardner, I am always looking at ways to be able to have my garden last all year round and I am ready to start dipping my toe in food storage, mostly canning. I loved reading this book and reading about more than the obvious canning. I appreciated that this book went down to the basics for all kinds of food storage so I could understand why you would use one method over another. I may even be looking at how to freeze dry myself! This is a book that I am putting on my Christmas list because I think a physical copy would be perfect as a reference book in my kitchen.

This is amazing for anyone wanting to learn about preserving food or just elongate the life of what you buy for the week. This book informs you about all ways of preserving including canning. It tells you what you need, how to do it and how long it should last. I've been trying to find one that helps me understand the many different ways of preserving and which process works for the different kinds of food.

Many variables come into play when it comes to preserving food, so this explains all of that to you. I will definitely be buying this book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested getting into food preservation.

Thank you netgalley for allowing me to read in exchange for an honest review.
