This is an absolutely brilliant book, it reminds me of Michael Greger, whose book 'how not to die' was similarly brilliant, and I ended up getting all of his books. Indeed Michael is quoted in this book, along with people such as Albert Einstein. I cannot recommend it too highly for anyone who is concerned about their health. As it is written by a doctor who genuinely wants the best outcome for his patients. The plant based diet is the right way to go, although I have not fully adopted it, what the doctor said about including more whole grains fruit and vegetables makes sense.

This book contains a lot of wonderful information regarding how eating plants can greatly improve your health and ultimately change your life. I am vegan already but this is a great reminder that eating more whole foods is definitely better for my health.

This is a great book for someone wanting to understand the science behind plant based eating. It's packed full of information and provides lots of details on the specific issues with the standard american diet, as well as specific health concerns. There is also a section with sample meal plans and shopping lists. The recipes, while they aren't the main focus of the book, do look to be relatively easy and are made with generally common ingredients.

Eat Plants Feel Whole is a fantastic book with information about the benefits of a plant based lifestyle. Includes recipes for some simple and flavourful dishes.

While this book had a lot of good info about a plant diet, I don't feel the information or recipes was any different than anything I had heard before. I am a very picky vegetarian and unfortunately a lot of the recipes did not appeal to me at all. I do appreciate the science and theory behind this, but to me it was lacking the creativity needed for people to stick with this diet.

Eat Plants Feel Whole is a tutorial and recipe plan guide to plant based whole food diets and lifestyle changes which promote health presented by Dr. George E. Guthrie. Released 15th Oct 2019 by AdventHealth Press, it's 420 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

This is an evidence-based science forward look at plant based whole foods and the benefits they provide in terms of health and wellness. The author writes authoritatively and enthusiastically (he's a medical doctor with additional qualifications in nutrition studies).

The book's language throughout is layman accessible; most readers with a basic education won't have any trouble following his reasoning or the advice he gives on diet, food, and lifestyle adjustments. Dr. Guthrie has developed a plan which he outlines: the food (including a fairly brutal assessment of the typical modern diet - full of trans fats, meats, refined sugars, and preservatives), lifestyle, and the "Eat Plants Feel Whole" plan - including a quickstart guide to follow for 18 days to see immediate benefits. The foods and recipes included are quite specific and the author explains how to choose foods (where there are choices) for different situations and benefits.

Throughout the book the author discusses chronic illness (specifically obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease) and cautions readers to be aware if they are using specific medications or have been diagnosed with specific conditions and when to seek advice from caregivers before changing diet or exercise regimes abruptly.

The book contains a number of good supportive resource materials including pantry/fridge/freezer checklists, daily meal plans (and the recipes), comprehensive bibliography and links lists, and a cross referenced index.

With the understanding that lifestyle and diet changes can provide remarkable health benefits, this could be the impetus that some readers need to begin to make a difference in their health and lives. My only quibble is that occasionally during reading it felt like the author was fervently and zealously proselytizing and marketing his system (including ads for educational materials, tote bags, and tumblers in the back of the book). The author's personal faith is mentioned in context a few times through the book which wasn't a problem, but might be for some readers.

Four stars. There's a lot of very useful information here and evidence based practice supporting these changes for improved health. Definitely worth a read and a trial run (18 days isn't long at all to give a good solid try).

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for honest feedback.

There is a lot included in this guide book for healthy lifestyles. It includes info about various "lifestyle ailments" like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart issues. I have dealt with blood sugar problems at a young age, and as a result, I needed to learn all about nutrition, preparing better foods, how the body works, etc. in a new way. I think that this book combines a lot of what [honest] doctors will tell you, as well as what you read on blogs or online articles. Then there is a large bulk of recipes that are simple and meat-free. So, of course, you need to want to eat food without meat as a component to get value from this book OR you can mix in a lot of dishes that are meat free (save money too) into your diet.

My cholesterol recently shot up and the doctor prescribed a statin. I asked about lifestyle and diet changes and was told it wouldn't make a difference and go on medication. I started investigating food alternatives and this boo k certainly provided a wealth of information with facts and science to back it up. Everything the Dr. said made sense and will try to follow. Stay tuned for the results in 90 days

Special thanks to NetGalley and Advent Health for providing me with ARC.

This book is so good, i love vegetables so much, they are very good for our bodies and health. I saw that people those days eating fast food more than vegetables and that make obesity rates high, especially in children.

Great book. Lots of very good information. I have not read a better book about food in a long time. In fact I plan to re read the book often!

As a nutritionist, I found this a very informative read. The book could have benefited from more illustration but great information and food for thought.

This book is for those who have decided to take a journey to transition to a healthier, plant based, diet.
I say you need to have made the decision, because despite the author saying it doesn’t “do a deep dive into nutrient education” it is very detailed analysis of macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients, what they do in our bodies, the recommended intake and which types of foods contain them, as well as discussing possible supplements.
You will need a notebook and highlighter as it is very much “studying” but there is a section summary at the end to make sure you understand the key lessons as it may be a tad overwhelming for absolute beginners.
As well as the food itself, we discuss the pros and cons of different types of exercise and meal plans and timings.
This all feels very theoretical, but it put into practice in the second half of the book which has an example of a meal plan and a list of around 100 recipes which the nutrient breakdown for each and a shopping check list of items which you will need in the pantry, fridge and freezer respectively.

Eat Plants Feel Whole by George E. Guthrie

Harness the Healing Power of Plants and Transform Your Health

This book is heavy on nutritional information and lifestyle choices that impact one’s health. It would be a good book to have as a resource on macronutrients, micronutrients, and other current topics. Each section of the book is summarized at the end in a way that I felt was helpful. The recipes are numerous though many of the recipes include ingredients I cannot find here in the small village in Lebanon that I live in. That said, the ideas posited are in keeping with my lifestyle and easy enough to incorporate into what is available locally.

As this is a topic that is not new to me, I did not find any new concepts to take in but did enjoy having my own thoughts reinforced. I don’t agree with everything in this book but did find it an interesting read.

Thank you to NetGalley and AdventHealth Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

"Eat Plants Feel Whole" offers a blend of science and practical guidance. You'll learn why converting to a plant-based diet can greatly lengthen your life and fight disease, but also why you will feel better by following the plan set forth in the book. Most of the chapters focus on explaining the benefits of the plan, but there are also terrific recipes and shopping lists provided. Some of the recipes provide alternate ways for preparing that involve fewer tools (such as mixer, etc.). I enjoyed the book and believe those thinking about going plant-based (as well as those who already are) will find much of interest.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a galley of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is an absolutely incredible resource and guide! The book is divided into three parts. Part I is all about food. Part II is about lifestyle. Part III is the plan. It is full of great information and easy to implement strategies and ideas to live a healthy and full life. This is one I'll return to again and again.

This is a terrific introduction for anyone who needs to reclaim their health. The information here isn't new, but it is presented in a way that makes it easily accessible for folks who are willing to invest 18 days in changing their lives. If every patient diagnosed with a condition that could benefit from lifestyle medicine could leave their doctor's office with this book, How Not to Die, and a video of Forks Over Knives, it could revolutionize healthcare in this country.

Growing up I was exposed to veganism, my mother has been one as long as I've known her. She has always looked fabulous for her age, much younger than my friends parents.
I never made the connection between her diet and her great health or appearance. Even though I was exposed to this type of lifestyle I didn't embrace it myself because we typically think, what do our parents know or oh that doesn't apply to me. It takes many years for what our parents say to us and what they show us to actually sink in.
I have actually eaten fairly healthily for a long time but have recently embraced the vegan lifestyle like this book promotes.
As the book says, all of this is included in the book,

EAT PLANTS FEEL WHOLE includes an 18-day QuickStart Plan, fifty plant-based recipes, a starter menu, shopping list, and lifestyle tips. In short, everything you need to initiate your health transformation.

In these pages you will:

• Find the 4 hidden culprits robbing you of energy, clarity, and vitality.

• Learn how to harness the power of plants today to transform your health tomorrow.

• Understand the scientific evidence for preventing and even reversing chronic disease.

• Discover the simple 18-day plan to increase your energy and feel whole!

As you embrace this new lifestyle, you'll discover energy and vitality you have never experienced before.

I feel so much better after following a vegan diet, more energy that I thought was gone at my age, smoother, younger looker skin, less often sick and so many dietary choices.
The book is chock full of delicious recipe choices.
Highly recommended to all!

This is a science based book with a lot of information relating to health and nutrition. It would be suitable for those curious to begin a plant-based journey, or those who have already begun and would like to understand the benefits from a medical point of view.

This is a good book on the wholesome of eating and how foods affect health. In-depth information on nutrition with examples and stories. I loved the 18 day meal plan and guidelines. There was a lot of information. I would have liked to have seen less recipes using tofu as I do not like the flavor and I know of plenty of plant-based eating that doesn't call for that, but it's all about preference. Otherwise, good information and helpful on getting started on an 18 day plan.

I received this book for free from Netgalley. That did not influence this review.

Did I think this blog was not eclectic enough? Eat Plants Feel Whole by Dr. George E. Guthrie is different from everything I’ve reviewed before. It isn’t quite what I expected. (I didn’t read the description carefully enough.) Nevertheless, I’m glad to have gotten it from Netgalley. It was a worthwhile read. (Or should be. That remains to be seen.)

I requested the book already very aware of the benefits of a vegan or vegetarian diet. But as an unrepentant carnivore, I was looking for a not-so-drastic way to decrease meat and increase whole grains and vegetables. I thought this was a vegan recipe book. While there are recipes and meal plans at the end of the book, the first part is more instructional/motivational.

The author is a wellness physician who guides people toward healthier lifestyles. There are many anecdotes of patients who were able to reverse their diabetes, cholesterol elevations, lose weight, etc. There are also fairly comprehensive discussions of micro and macronutrients–how much do we need? Where can those nutrients best be found?

For readers who want a firm foundation before embarking on a new, healthier lifestyle, this book provides that. For those who want motivation to make a change, this book is certainly inspiring. It’s lengthy for all that, and I found myself skimming a good deal, though I slowed down when parts of the book hit home.

The recipes that I was hoping for come in the second half of the book. I had fully intended to try a few for this review. However, in what I consider a poor omen for committing to this particular lifestyle change, we suddenly have a lot going on in our lives (emerging from our pandemic antisocial stupor), and this review is so long overdue that I didn’t want to put it off any longer. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, I’ll post an update.

For now, this is a comprehensive guide to plant-based eating. If you are someone interested in what all that entails and how it could be beneficial, this book can help.

I did not read Guthrie's Eat Plants Feel Whole book as an educator.

Eat Plants, Feel Whole by George Guthrie was very well organized and easy to follow. I appreciated the various, well laid out sections with the specific and helpful information about connections to health. The information provided in the book was easy to follow and understand. The recipes at the end of the book were easy to understand with accessible ingredients to those who may live in smaller communities. I already recommended this book to several people to use with their healthcare businesses and clients.

This is an insightful and well-researched look into the problems associated with the modern convenience diet and how hole-food, plant-based food choices can help to prevent and even reverse many of the associated health ills. With included plans and recipes, this is a great resource to use to get started!
