Description

Becoming Nora explores how unexamined pasts and repressed emotions can simmer beneath a seemingly ordinary and happy marriage.

Until the day her husband shattered her world with the news that he was unhappy and wanted a separation, Nora Stanton had been sure her life was settled, perfect in fact. At age forty, they had everything: good careers, a nice house, and two children-just as planned.

Had she concocted an image of a happy family? How had she been so oblivious?

Nora is forced to face her misconceptions and to uncover parts of herself that had gotten buried in the day-to-day containment of her marriage. As she learns to free herself, she finds herself making choices the old Nora could not have imagined.

Throughout Becoming Nora, I found myself getting more and more attached to Nora and her personal growth. I've never read a novel with such well thought out and executed character development. I enjoyed this book so much that I started reading it again right after I finished reading it for the first time. You'll experience cries and laughs as you follow along Nora's life but mainly, you'll just feel so grateful that you got the opportunity to join Nora on her journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an insightful but entertaining read and hope that you'll be able to enjoy the twists and turns of Becoming Nora as much as I did.

Margaret Kirby in her first novel establishes herself as an outstanding author with an acute sensitivity to the greatest barrier to relationship with self and each other—depth deprivation. Yes we can live our entire lives on the surface—hiding our feelings lost in thoughts, inattentive, fearful of what we may find. As she probes deeper and deeper Nora courageously discovers beauty that rises to the surface and enriches her relationship with her husband, children, friends, and herself. Write more Margaret. Joy awaits us when we cease to skim the superficial and dive deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars: A beautifully written story about a woman learning about herself through changing relationships

Becoming Nora let the reader see the manys ways life's changes can develop growth and understanding. Nora was able to learn, and grow from all the difficulties she faced with her spouse and children. In many surprising turns, the author showed us how strength can be found in the most unusual circumstances. Nora's relationship with her son was a study in how to learn to parent to fit the child's issues, not the adults'. Nora's ultimate ability to understand how her parents influenced her marriage also provided a window into her taking the marriage to a survivable state.

This story gives hope to difficult relationships and how they can survive with an outcome that works. A great read, thank you.
