Description

It’s 1982 in Bailey Springs, Alabama, where secrets aren’t just whispered—they’re baked right into the biscuits.

Trudy has kept her head down since high school, when her unexpected pregnancy and marriage to star-quarterback Jimmie Beaumont scandalized the town. A few years later, after Jimmie’s tragic demise, folks still haven’t forgiven her and blame her for his death. Now engaged to a blue-blood politician, Haskel Moody, Trudy’s back in the spotlight—especially after taking a job teaching chemistry to save his campaign for mayor.

As Trudy encounters old high-school ghosts, she also confronts Coach Shug Meechum, whose laid-back charm and infuriating grin incite more than just her frustrations. Meanwhile, Trudy’s mother, Leta Pearl, has been giving some chemistry lessons of her own—slipping her mysterious love-inducing biscuits to men in town to advance her own agenda.

In Bailey Springs, football, tradition, and appearances often mean more than truth. So, when secret recipes are uncovered, and new desires collide with a long-buried tragedy, Trudy must decide if she’ll play by the rules or risk everything for the life she wants.

A laugh-out-loud romp with a smidge of Southern magic, Leta Pearl’s Love Biscuits confirms that true love—like the best biscuits—takes some heat to rise.

such a sweet book that had a little bit of everything woven through it. and had me rooting for the characters more and more as i was swept up in the story.
loved getting to know this group of folks. and especially loved the biscuit theme. nice touch and added some really giggly moments from me.
i felt so much for Trudy. it felt like some people were still in school with how they whispered about her. i mean come on guys it might be nice if instead you were there for this woman who's been through so much. how about that? coming back to this town and to be married to someone new, someone important does seem to have eased the judgement over her.
but there is some twinkle and sparkle for her. but will it land her into more trouble or is she finally being seen for the first time.
Leta was certainly stirring up recipes and i was here for it. but will some tasters bite into some trouble.
Arlon manages to weave so much human happening in this book. showing the sides to people which aren't always perfect but aren't just bad either. there is so much charm and heart to the writing of this book too. it makes you less judgy yourself as well because there is far more to situation and people than what we hear, see or assume.
this was such a brilliant read. i had the best time with it, and Arlon truly did take me into this little gang of characters and im so lucky to get to do so.
i was rooting for Trudy so much and i just wanted her to be ok. and perhaps even happy if she could be brave enough?

Leta Pearl's Love Biscuits was a fun read. Being from the south, I could totally picture these characters and their backhanded southern charm (bless her heart!) I really enjoyed Leta Pearl's character and her agendas, and following Trudy's story as she takes back her life and stares town gossip in the face, unwavering.
Overall, I would give 4.5 stars!

This sweet and enjoyable story is about finding the confidence to love yourself and create the life you want, not the life that is expected. Set in small town Alabama in the 1980’s football is everything Trudy is back in town trying to rebuild her life with her young son after the death of her high school sweetheart, the football quarterback. She thinks her future is secure, she is engaged to the school superintendent and mayoral candidate Haskel Moody, and she’s just secured a teaching position at the high school that includes her being the cheerleading advisor. Her mother Leta is doing everything including feeding Haskel love biscuits, to make sure things go well. But the town is full of mean girls trying to ruin Trudy’s reputation and engagement and football coach Shug Meechum makes her feel some kind of way. Is the secure life with Haskel really what she wants? And what exactly are love biscuits? Trudy was a character that I could identify with, she was trying to be the best mother to her son by creating a secure life for him. Her interactions with the students showed her to be exactly the type of teacher we need more of, caring, thoughtful, and trying to help her students discover who they are and what they want their life to look like while dealing with bullies, mean girls, and teaching science. The love biscuits had Trudy (and me) questioning if the relationships were actually being dictated by the consumption of the biscuits or if something else was going on and the outcome made me smile. Many readers will recognize the small town setting that is ruled by a high school sport and the continuing rivalry that many adults allow to carry over from high school. If you are looking for a book about finding the confidence to create your own life while living where everyone knows what is ‘best’ for you I recommend this book.

Ever since her teenage pregnancy scandal ages ago, Trudy has not been able to escape the scrutinous eyes of the Bailey Spring residents, nobody especially more than the local newspaper’s column writer, Barbara Beaumont, the aunt of Trudy’s late husband, Jimmie. With Jimmie having died of “mysterious causes” Barbara has made it her life mission to ruin Trudy and make her life hell. With her new job as the high school chemistry teacher and now engaged to Haskel Moody, the superintendent aiming to run for mayor, while Trudy tries to move forward with her life, Barbara has found the perfect fuel to drag her down.

Colorful characters that are so full of life that they jump out the book and writing that is fun and engaging with dialogue that truly pop and drip with emotions, Leta Pearl’s Love Biscuits was a read that I had fun with. Experience the small town drama of the southern in the 1980s in this book that puts you right there with the characters; cheering on a main character that deserves a world of happiness. For Trudy, it’s time to stand up to a bully that’s got town-wide influence and it starts now.

This is a sweet and sometimes funny story set in the early 1980s in Alabama. It’s part rom-com, part commentary on the time and place, part “Mean Girls.” There is a gay subplot that kind of works until it comes to a pat resolution at the end. There are some inconsistencies in the story, especially when it comes to the magic biscuits, but it’s a quick read and very enjoyable from beginning to end.

A delightfully funny read, with some serious moments that might be a touch anachronistic. There were a few small-town cliches, but the book overall is written very well, and turns out well in the end. It's not the sort of book I'd normally pick up in a book shop, but I figured I'd give it a look in and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The characterisation was done quickly - I wanted to smack Barbara Beaumont the second I read her first bulletin, it was very Bless Your Heartish - and solidly, and I adored Emily's little inputs immensely. A fun read for sure.

Set in the 1980s, Leta Pearl's Love Biscuits is filled with Stars Hollow-like small-town drama, but with a Southern twist and a dash of practical magic. I had so much fun reading this novel; it has a bit of everything, and it is so perfect for the season.

Teen mom Trudy is back home living with her parents after a tragedy that left her a widow and a single mom. She's trying to get her life together, and everything is pointing that way since she's about to be married to her boyfriend, who's running for town mayor. Now, Leta, Trudy's mom, has plans of her own to piggyback ride on Trudy's future social status. She's pushing her agenda with every bite of her delicious biscuits, but she's creating a sticky situation for Trudy, and things might fall apart. The mother and daughter are a hilarious duo, with their antics providing a constant source of entertainment. I must admit that I always looked forward to Barbara's columns in the local newspaper. She is Trudy's former mother-in-law, and the woman is out to stain Trudy and her family's reputation. Barbara's pettiness is so ridiculous; she is the biggest Karen of Bailey Springs, but a lot is going on behind Barbara's Bulletin that she does not write about.

Stagg's characters are interesting, funny, and also deep. The novel explores themes of discrimination, depression, and LGBTQIA+ issues and how these impact different characters. Like you'd follow the scent of freshly baked biscuits, this novel shows how important it is to follow your heart, live for your life, and love who fills your heart with joy. The mystery behind the biscuits hooks the reader because, while it is obvious that something magical is going on, we don't truly understand it until the end.

Readers who enjoy rom-com novels, southern charm, magic, and the 80's will eat this up. It fits the season if you want something magical and cozy.
