Description

The Inner Space Traveler (second edition) presents a consciousness-based approach to trauma resolution that emerged from my decades of clinical practice as a psychotherapist. When the methods I had been trained in reached their limits — both with clients and in my own healing — I began exploring what happens when we stop trying to change our experience and instead allow unfiltered awareness to meet it directly. The seven principles in the book describe what I discovered: that transformation occurs not through effort or technique, but through honest, impartial observation that gives consciousness the accurate information it needs to do its work.

The book integrates contemplative practice, epigenetics research on inherited trauma, and direct experiential inquiry in a framework that bridges clinical psychology and consciousness studies. Its central thesis — that self-deception is the primary obstacle to transformation because it distorts the information available to consciousness — offers a distinctive contribution to the transpersonal literature. The approach moves beyond mindfulness-based models by addressing why sustained observation alone often fails to produce lasting change, and what becomes possible when observation is freed from the subtle agendas that typically accompany it.

Advance Praise

" In a lifelong quest to heal his own suffering, author David L. Hoefer developed seven principles to explain his own prescription for relief: "Consciousness + Awareness = Change." Hoefer explains in his Introduction that while most self-help books exhort readers to change, "this book…suggests that trying to change is the very thing keeping you stuck." Instead, he advises embracing feelings, allowing pain, and observing your reactions "without trying to change them." "[A]wareness, by itself," he later writes, "reorganizes consciousness." Hoefer notes that human history has caused generations of trauma, which we all carry in our genes — inspiring the first principle: "Nothing Is Personal." The struggle to deal with trauma begins with awareness, "noticing without motive," which underpins the second principle: "Consciousness Creates Your Experience, Awareness Changes Consciousness." If you notice and then try to actively change the feeling or circumstance, you will only reinforce it — thus the third principle: "Whatever You Do To Change Reinforces the Belief That Is Causing Distress." Hoefer follows with four more principles, reminding readers how each builds on the others, answering common questions and countering misconceptions, and offering practical applications for challenges such as grief, shame, depression, and other types of dissatisfaction. Hoefer explains, reiterates, and reinforces his theory clearly without being monotonous, addressing questions calmly, patiently, and with total commitment. For readers whose spiritual practice of affirmations, breathwork, or mantras — or whose years of psychotherapy — haven't helped, The Inner Space Traveler will guide them to meet their unique consciousness, which has "nothing to prove…nothing to defend...nothing to become…nothing to fix." Also available as an ebook." —BlueInk Review

"Outdated spiritual practices, modern therapy, or self-help methodologies often don't work for people seeking recovery from long-term trauma or depression. According to author David L. Hoefer, transformation comes from within, through our own consciousness. The Inner Space Traveler guides the reader toward a counterintuitive path, featuring seven grounded principles of personal transformation. The book explores the evolution of consciousness and the inherited trauma humanity has faced throughout history, as well as its awareness. Hoefer shows you how to break through this cycle of trauma. The author puts forward the idea that awareness changes consciousness and encourages readers to embrace truth as the foundation and become the impartial observer of their own selves. He also explains the benefits of staying true to one's unique morals and ethics, and practicing grief to understand the meaning of loss. The Inner Space Traveler is one of the most unique self-help books I've ever read. It pushes you toward discovering your own healing path in a way that almost seems paradoxical at first but makes absolute sense in hindsight. David L. Hoefer engages the reader very differently in this book than you will find in any other self-help guide. The author argues that we already possess all the tools within ourselves to start our healing journey, and it begins with acquiring a better understanding of consciousness and its transformation. Some of the concepts introduced here are truly unique, particularly in relation to consciousness. Overall, it's an illuminating guide that makes you introspect while leaving you feeling empowered and motivated. Highly recommended. — Pikasho Deka, Readers' Favorite, 5 stars
