I like the intention of this book and am probably not it's intended audience but the concept is a good one and likely serves a useful purpose for those with autism.

As an autistic adult, I thoroughly enjoyed Beardon’s perspective and his unique approach to navigating a world that, unfortunately, isn’t always accommodating to autistic individuals. I found the instances where he shifts his thinking or demonstrates how autistic adults can comprehend various situations to be particularly insightful. These insights provide valuable strategies for effectively managing everyday tasks. Additionally, I believe this book is beneficial for those unfamiliar with the autism spectrum, as it offers practical guidance on how to support autistic individuals in their interactions. Overall, it’s an invaluable resource for autistic individuals.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

In his book, Dr Luke Beardon suggests several reasonable adjustments that could make various situations and environments more inclusive to autistic adults. As an autistic adult, the book was incredibly validating and consciously chose to address autistic audiences directly.

That said, I felt the book wasn’t as helpful to me (as an autistic person navigating what reasonable adjustments help me thrive) as it would be to audiences that have more power to implement the reasonable adjustments I ask for. I think I perhaps expected more practical advice on how to request reasonable adjustments and what to do when you face pushback. I really hope this book finds an audience in medical professionals, teachers, and employers who can use the information and examples provided to create more inclusive and accepting spaces for autistic people.

This book presents itself as a guide to accommodations that can make life easier for autistic adults—and the suggested accommodations are thoughtful, practical, and genuinely meaningful.

As an autistic reader, I found much of the book validating, but I also realized it’s less a guide for autistic people to implement changes ourselves and more a resource for the non-autistic people around us.

Early on, the author introduces the concept of “autistic courtesy,” and in many ways the rest of the book models exactly that—it’s an excellent resource for helping non-autistic readers understand how to extend that courtesy in meaningful ways. Different sections would be especially valuable for educators, employers, medical professionals, and anyone hoping to create more accessible environments, while also ensuring they understand WHY autistic people would find these accommodations so helpful.

As an autistic adult, I can confidently say I would deeply appreciate—and benefit from—the kinds of reasonable accommodations suggested throughout this book. I hope it finds the people in positions to implement them, and that they take the suggestions to heart!

Thank you NetGalley for this read now.
This was not exactly what I was looking for. I agree with most of what was proposed in this book though. It's just that there's a real big gap between those adjustments and the reality.

A practical, accessible guide focused on how environments can be adapted to better support autistic adults, particularly in workplaces and services. Beardon emphasizes concrete adjustments—like reducing sensory overload (lighting, noise), allowing alternative communication methods, and providing clear, written instructions rather than relying on verbal ambiguity. It’s less theoretical and more actionable, making it especially useful for employers or anyone looking to make immediate, realistic changes.
